Laura Mononen (born October 5, 1984 in Lohja , born Laura Ahervo ) is a Finnish cross-country skier .

Career

Mononen has been participating in competitions organized by the Fédération Internationale de Ski since 2004 . From 2008 to 2014 she mainly competed in the Scandinavian Cup . She finished fourth in the overall standings in the 2010/11 season . She ran her first World Cup race in March 2009 in Lahti , which she finished with 56th place in the 10 km freestyle. She got her first World Cup points in the 2011/12 season at the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo . At the Tour de Ski 2011/12 she reached 20th place in the overall ranking. She finished the season in 45th place in the overall World Cup ranking. At the Tour de Ski 2012/13 she came in 30th place overall. At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, she finished 19th at the Nordic Opening in Lillehammer . In December 2014 she achieved her best individual World Cup result to date in Davos with tenth place over 10 km classic. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun in 2015 , she came 34th in the 10 km freestyle. After finishing 22nd at the Nordic Opening in Ruka at the beginning of the 2015/16 season, she finished second in the relay in Lillehammer. At the Tour de Ski 2016 she came ninth in the overall standings with four top ten placements. She finished the season in 15th place in the overall World Cup and 11th in the Distance World Cup. In the 2016/17 season she finished ninth in the World Cup mini tour in Lillehammer and 12th in the Tour de Ski 2016/17 . In December 2016, she took second place with the relay at the World Cup in La Clusaz . At the beginning of February 2017 she was third in the sprint and second over 10 km classic at the Finnish championships in Keuruu . At the season highlight of the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti, she won the bronze medal with the relay. In addition, she finished 18th in the 30 km mass start race, 14th place over 10 km classic and 13th place in the skiathlon . At the end of the season she came in 18th place in the World Cup finals in Québec and reached tenth place in the overall World Cup and ninth place in the Distance World Cup. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , she ran 23rd place over 10 km freestyle and 19th place in the skiathlon.

In the 2018/19 season, Mononen finished 30th in the Lillehammer Triple, 11th in the Tour de Ski 2018/19 and 32nd in the World Cup final in Québec . In addition, she won third place with the relay in Ulricehamn . Her best placements at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2019 in Seefeld in Tirol were 12th place in the skiathlon and sixth place with the relay. She finished the season in 31st place in the overall World Cup and in 24th place in the Distance World Cup. In the following season, she achieved 34th place in the Ruka Triple and 18th place in the ski tour, 37th place in the overall World Cup. She was also in Lahti second with the relay.
