Julia Kykkänen (born April 17, 1994 in Lahti ) is a Finnish ski jumper .

Career

Kykkänen, who started ski jumping as a child and now competes for the Lahden Hiihtoseura club , has been jumping in the Ski Jumping Continental Cup since 2007 .

She completed her first jumping on August 12, 2007 in Bischofsgrün . She finished jumping in 46th place. On December 11th, 2007 she was able to achieve COC points for the first time with place 27 on the normal hill in Notodden . A day later she even reached 17th place. In Zaō she was also 17th that were her two best Continental Cup placements this season. In the overall ranking she finished 43rd with 42 points. At the Junior World Championships in Zakopane in 2008 , she reached 32nd place on the normal hill.

In the 2008-09 season her best results were two 18th places in Sapporo . At the Junior World Championships in 2009 in Štrbské Pleso she was 22nd on the normal hill. Kykkänen participated in the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 and was the first female ski jumper from Finland to take part in international championships. Despite being only 14 years old, she reached 26th place in jumping on the normal hill. In the end she finished 41st in the overall COC ranking with 71 points.

In the 2009/10 season Kykkänen jumped regularly in the Continental Cup for the first time. She reached the 2nd round in about half of the jumps. Her best result of the season was an 11th place in Zaō. At the Junior World Championships in Hinterzarten , she finished 23rd. In the overall COC ranking, she finished 30th with 86 points, which was her best result to date.

In 2010/11 Kykkänen was able to regularly reach the 2nd round for the first time and even finished 6th as the best result of the season in Notodden . She also took part in the 2011 Junior World Championships in Otepää and finished 17th. The same placement she achieved at the 2011 Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo . Overall, Kykkänen was able to improve slightly, in the overall standings she finished 29th with 171 points.

When a World Cup in ski jumping for women was held for the first time in the 2011/12 season (there was no summer Grand Prix yet), she was initially able to regularly reach the second round in the summer . At the start of the winter season she finished 6th at the COC in Rovaniemi - her best result of the season. At the very first World Cup competition for women on December 3, 2011 in Lillehammer , she finished 14th. In the toilet, that was also her best result of the season and thus Kykkänen's best ever. At the Junior World Championships 2012 in Erzurum she reached the 8th place. In the overall WC ranking she was 29th with 80 points.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 in Val di Fiemme , she took tenth place on the normal hill. On March 9, 2013, she  won a Continental Cup competition for the first time in Örnsköldsvik  - tied with Russian Irina Avakumova .

In December 2013 she took part in the Universiade in Predazzo . In the individual competition on the normal hill she took sixth place and in the mixed team competition she won the silver medal together with Sami Niemi . On February 2, 2014, Kykkänen jumped on the podium for the first time at the World Cup in Hinzenbach, Austria . Behind Sara Takanashi and Daniela Iraschko-Stolz , the Finn came third. At the Olympic premiere of women's ski jumping in Sochi , she was the only Finnish participant in 17th place. On March 15, 2014, she was able to once again reach the podium in a World Cup competition in Falun with third place. With 429 points, she finished the 2013/14 World Cup season in ninth place in the overall standings.

In the 2014/15 season she could no longer confirm the results of the previous season in the World Cup. Her only top ten placement was ninth at the season finale on the large hill in Oslo . In the overall World Cup, she finished 24th. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2015 in Falun, she was 23rd in the individual competition on the normal hill and in the mixed team competition, she finished tenth with the Finnish team. In the two following seasons 2015/16 and 2016/17, she did not come close to the performances of the 2013/14 season. Her best individual placement in these two years was a sixth place in December 2015 in Nizhny Tagil with a total of four top ten placements. In the overall World Cup, she was 21st and 20th. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 2017 , she finished 19th in the individual and 11th in the mixed team competition.

On September 9, 2017, she reached the podium in the Summer Grand Prix for the first time . In Tchaikovsky she came second behind Sara Takanashi . In February 2018 she took part in the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang - as in 2014 as the only Finnish ski jumper . In the individual competition on the normal hill , she finished 23rd. At the 2019 World Championships in Seefeld in Tyrol , Austria , she was eleventh with the Finnish mixed team.

Trivia

In addition to her ski jumping career, Julia Kykkänen also plays soccer for the FC Reipas juniors . She is the daughter of ski jumping trainer Kimmo Kykkänen , who, in addition to the women's national team, also looks after the Lahden Hiihtoseura juniors.
