biography

Adrián Solano comes from Maracay , where he earns his living as a cook. He only started roller skiing at the age of 21 because, according to his own statements, he loves "trying out difficult things". With the support of his experienced compatriot, the multiple World Cup participant César Baena , he began to train five hours a day on the weekends and finally got the opportunity to represent Venezuela at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2017 in Lahti, Finland .

Incident in Paris

Even the journey to the World Cup was turbulent for the athlete. Solano planned to prepare for the upcoming major event in Sweden ; on a stopover in Paris , however, he was denied onward travel. Airport staff did not believe that he was a professional skier on the way to training. Rumors that he had been taken into custody as a terrorist suspect by the French police and had to be triggered by the Venezuelan consulate could not be confirmed. Solano nevertheless felt discriminated against by the French authorities, and the Venezuelan government also sharply criticized the officials' actions. With just 28 euros in his pocket, Solano was forced to return home. Finnish businessman Aleksi Valavuori became aware of the story and contacted Solano's coach César Baena, with whom he set up a fundraising campaign. Within a few days, crowdfunding was used to acquire 4,000 euros, which were used to finance both a flight ticket and accommodation costs for the cross-country skier.

World Cup 2017

In addition to the brothers César and Bernardo Baena , he was one of several Venezuelan cross-country skiers who took part in the Nordic World Ski Championships. In the qualification over 10 km classic he had to give up on February 22, 2017 due to strength after halfway and already more than 39 minutes behind and was rated with DNF . In qualifying for the sprint, he finished 156th and last place a day later. With a broken stick and more than ten minutes behind the winner Sergei Ustjugow , Solano fought his way to the finish line after several falls. In connection with his previous history, these appearances also earned him a lot of sympathy via videos. In German-speaking countries, he was dubbed the “funniest cross-country skier in history” and “clumsy and tragic hero”. The New York Times author Jack Williams named the South American in the same breath as Eddie the Eagle and the Jamaican bobsleigh team from Calgary in 1988 . Only afterwards did Solano announce that he had walked on snow for the first time in Lahti.
