César Baena (born November 2, 1986 in Caracas ) is a Venezuelan cross-country skier and biathlete . He is considered to be the most successful cross-country skier in Venezuela at world championships.

Life

César Baena first came into contact with skiing in 2005 during a study exchange lasting several weeks in Germany. Later he trained as a student at the University of Klagenfurt under the supervision of Tony Lindsberger in Austria. In November 2008 he started at the 15 km freestyle race in Muonio .

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec in 2009 , he started for Venezuela. In the pursuit over 2 × 15 km he achieved the 60th place and in the mass start over 50 km the 56th place. In the sprint qualification he reached 132nd place and thus the last place. His first of three World Cup races so far he ran in December 2009 in Düsseldorf , which he finished in 75th place in the sprint.

In 2011 he started, together with his brother Bernardo Baena , at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo ; however, he retired from the 30 km pursuit race and the men's 50 km freestyle mass start. In the sprint he reached rank 116, where he was able to defeat the Kenyan Philip Boit for the first time . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2013 in Val di Fiemme , he achieved 126th place in the sprint. In February 2017 he came in 148th place in the sprint at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti .

At the South American level as well as in regional races in Europe, César Baena also took part in several biathlon races.
