Gabriel Mälesskircher (also Mäleßkircher) (* around 1425 or around 1430; † around 1495) was a painter who worked in southern Bavaria in the second half of the 15th century.

Life

Mälesskircher is documented in Munich since 1461. He was at the head of the Munich painters' guild several times, had been a member of the council since 1469 and became second mayor in 1485. In that year he also acquired Kempfenhausen Castle on Lake Starnberg . The Mäleßkircherstraße in Munich-Daglfing is named after him.

Mälesskircher, who is considered to be the successor to Gabriel Angler and a representative of the “second Munich painting school”, worked mainly for the Tegernsee Monastery , probably also because he was married to the sister of Abbot Konrad Ayrenschmalz . The pieces of furniture he created between 1474 and 1479 ended up in the Schleissheim Palace Gallery , the Bavarian National Museum and the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. Michael Wolgemut from Nuremberg worked as a senior journeyman in his productive workshop . A miniature portrait of Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian is preserved in the legal book of the City of Munich.

The following works have survived from Mälesskircher:

  • Fürstenfeld Monastery in Fürstenfeldbruck : two wing paintings in the sacristy: Nativity, Pentecost, around 1470 (attributed)
  • Munich, Salvatorkirche: Annunciation, blessing Christ, Our Lady, members of the Ridler family in the porch of the portal, around 1475 (attributed)
  • Mural from the ancestral hall of the Munich Residence, around 1470, now in the Bavarian National Museum
  • Altar furnishings (13 panels) of the monastery church Tegernsee (but not the Tegernsee Passion Altar), some of them (pictures of the four evangelists, St. Luke paints the Virgin Mary, St. Matthew tames the dragon, miracles at the grave of St. John, martyrdom of St. Mark) today in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid , in the Staatsgalerie Burghausen
  • The saints Christoph and Onuphrius ( Museum Georg Schäfer , Schweinfurt )
