The Sonntagshorn is the highest mountain in the Chiemgau Alps . It lies between Ruhpolding and Unken on the border of Germany and Austria . According to German and Austrian measurements, its height is 1961 m above sea level. NHN and 1961 m above sea level A. stated.
Geographical location
The Sonntagshorn rises on the German-Austrian border and thus also that of the German state of Bavaria with the districts of Berchtesgadener Land and Traunstein and the Austrian state of Salzburg with the district of Zell am See (Pinzgau) there . Its summit lies on the seam line of the Zeller Forst district belonging to the municipality of Ruhpolding and the Weißbacher Forst district belonging to the municipality of Schneizlreuth (both Bavaria; Germany) as well as the cadastral municipality Unken belonging to the municipality Unken and the cadastral municipality Gföll belonging to this municipality (both Salzburg; Austria ). The mountain is located south-south-east of Ruhpolding and south-south-west of Inzell , north of Unken above the Unkener Heutal and west of the Saalach valley.

The mountain is not accessible by cable cars. It is particularly popular with ski tourers in winter . A comparatively comfortable ascent takes place from the south via the Austrian Heutal . The north ascent from the German side is more strenuous, but more spectacular and leads through unsettled natural landscapes, initially over a relatively easy forest path, then over steep scree and, until midsummer, also over old snow fields. The increase over the middle Kraxenbach requires some climbing ( difficulty level II ) and rockfall risk. The normal route starts from Melleck and leads through the Steinbachgraben to the high alpine pastures and finally to the summit.
Others
The name Sonntagshorn has nothing to do with the weekday Sunday , but is derived from the sun roof . The structure of the summit takes the form of a roof on its south side, which is very strongly irradiated by the sun due to the relatively low incline.
On Austrian territory, near the summit at 1940 m, is the entrance to the Sonntagshorn cave (cadastral number 1347/1). It is a 750 meter long, sloping cave with shaft sections and halls leading downwards, which reaches down to 1710 m .
