Herbert Weiz (born June 27, 1924 in Cumbach ) is a former German politician ( SED ). He was Minister for Science and Technology and Deputy Chairman of the GDR Council of Ministers .

Life

Weiz, the son of a shoemaker, attended elementary school , completed commercial training between 1938 and 1941 and was an employee in Sättelstädt until 1943 . In 1942 he became a member of the NSDAP . He was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1943 and was a US prisoner of war from 1943 to December 1945 .

In 1945 he joined the KPD and, after the forced unification of the SPD and KPD in 1946, became a member of the SED. From 1946 to 1949 he studied at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena and graduated with a degree . pole. from. From 1949 to 1951 he was a doctoral student and at the same time an employee and senior consultant in the Ministry of Economics and Labor in Erfurt . From 1951 to 1955 he completed a distance learning course as an engineer-economist at the Technical University of Dresden .

From 1951 to 1953 he was department or plant manager of the VEB “Optima” office machine factory in Erfurt , then until 1955 head of the head office for light engineering in the Ministry of Mechanical Engineering. From 1955 to 1962 Weiz was First Deputy Plant Manager at VEB Carl Zeiss Jena and from 1962 to 1967 State Secretary for Research and Technology. In 1958 Weiz became a member of the Central Committee of the SED . In 1962 he did his doctorate at the Institute for Social Sciences at the Central Committee of the SED with a dissertation on the Mitrofanow method for Dr. rer. oec. at the IfG

From 1963 Weiz was a member of the Research Council and from 1963 to March 1990 a member of the People's Chamber . From 1967 he acted as deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers and in 1974 succeeded Günter Prey as Minister for Science and Technology. In November / December 1989 he resigned from all offices with the Willi Stoph government and the Central Committee. Weiz was also deputy chairman of the GDR section of the government commission for economic and scientific-technical cooperation between the GDR and the USSR.

Awards

Weiz was awarded the “ Labor Banner ” (1959), the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze (1959), silver (1970) and gold (1976) as well as to the Patriotic Order of Merit in Gold (1984) and the Karl -Marx-Order (1989) awarded.

In 1986 he received the Dr.-Ing. hc from the Technical University of Karl-Marx-Stadt .
