Leitner made his World Cup debut on December 3, 2016 in Östersund . A week later he won World Cup points for the first time with 39th place in the Pokljuka sprint . In his first season as a substitute for Julian Eberhard , he delivered an impeccable performance and helped his team to sixth place. Due to a severe inflammation on his right index finger, Leitner had to undergo an operation at the end of January 2017 and thus missed the home world championships in Hochfilzen .
In the 2017/18 season he missed the qualification for the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang , but was able to win the gold medal in the individual at the European Championships in Ridanna . In the next season he was able to significantly improve his hit rate, was part of the regular line-up of the Austrian team in the relay and achieved his best World Cup result with twelfth place in the Oberhof sprint . In March he took part in the World Championships in Östersund for the first time and qualified with good performances for the final mass start, in which he also achieved his best individual result with 19th place. At the end of winter he managed to improve again and after sprinting tenth, he narrowly missed his first podium as fourth in the Oslo pursuit .
In the following season he was able to improve his World Cup results. At the World Championships in Antholz , he was first twice the best Austrian in sprint and pursuit, finishing ninth in each case and finished sixth in the mass start with the second-best running time just twelve seconds behind the bronze medal.
