Krasta ( Albanian also Krastë ) is a mining town in eastern Albania . Until the summer of 2015 it was the center of the Komuna Martanesh , which in 2011 had 1836 inhabitants. Today Krasta belongs to the Bashkia Bulqiza within the Qark Dibra .

The place is isolated in the mountains on a plateau at around 1100 m above sea level. A. and is considered the highest city in the country. Towards the south the plateau drops steeply into the gorge of the river Mat . In the east rises the mountain Mali i Koltit ( 1592 m above sea level )

A 16 kilometer long mountain road opens up the place from Qafa e Buallit a little west of Bulqiza.

history

Construction of the mining town began in 1970 in the area of the village of Gjon , which is about one kilometer to the southwest. As early as 1967 had copper - mine Batra, a few kilometers north-east, began operation. Copper mining began in the Thekna mine further east in 1959. Mining is still practiced in various other places in the region; In 1971 a mine was also opened in Krasta east of the town. In 1974 the first residents moved into the place, which was declared a city in 1979. There was a middle school, a miners museum, a hospital and cultural activities in Krasta. In 1987, a chrome enrichment factory was opened. After 1991, many mines were closed.

Population and society

The population was given for the year 2007 with 2138 inhabitants. Around 81% of the inhabitants of the Martanesh community lived in the main town. The referendum of 2011 showed only 1836 inhabitants for the whole community. Like all mountain areas in Albania, Martanesh was also affected by heavy migration after 1991.

Thanks to increased world market prices for chromium, mining activities in the region increased again after the year 2000, with often only small private companies operating. Only around 160 residents of the community had a regular job in 2007, almost half of them in mining and over 30 in education. 13% of families receive social assistance. Around 2008 there was still a doctor and a middle school in Krasta.
