The Südtirol Arena ( Italian Arena Alto Adige ) is a biathlon facility in South Tyrol (Italy).
The stadium is intended for the biathlon competitions of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina.
location
The stadium is located in the Antholz Valley in the area of the municipality of Rasen-Antholz , more precisely in the Antholz Obertal district . The Südtirol Arena is the highest stadium in the World Cup, the height of around 1600 meters above sea level means additional physical strain for the athletes.
history
The biathlon stadium, built around 1969, has hosted the World Cup almost every year since it opened in 1971. Antholz also hosted several major events, for example the biathlon world championships in 1975 , 1976 , 1983 , 1995 , 2007 and 2020 , as well as the two junior world championships in 1975 and 1983.
In the run-up to the 2007 World Championships, the stadium was extensively rebuilt in 2006, the stands were enlarged and a new service building for the technical competition area was built. For this reason too, the number of viewers grew considerably from 2008 onwards .
ORA Trophy and the Golden Classics
Antholz has been a member of the ORA Trophy since 1998 . It was brought into being by the biathlon towns of Oberhof , Ruhpolding and Antholz. Additional prize money will be given to the overall winner of the three World Cups. Since 2005 this competition has been called Golden Classics .
Other use
In the stadium, not only biathlon, but also cross-country competitions take place. The Italian championships for biathlon , cross-country skiing and alpine skiing (on the branch route) are also held in Antholz.
