The Vysočina Arena in Nové Město na Moravě in the Czech Republic is a training and competition venue for biathlon and cross-country skiing .

The Vysočina Arena is located in the Vysočina region just a few hundred meters outside the town of Nové Město na Moravě . The stadium is at an altitude of 620  m , the highest point of the trails at 665  m and the lowest point at 610  m .

Furnishing

The stadium has an A license , which is required to hold biathlon world cups and world championships. In addition to the functional buildings customary for biathlon stadiums of this size, the stadium has a floodlight system with which large parts of the course can also be illuminated for competitions at dusk or at night. The Vysočina Arena is able to produce up to 15,000 m³ of artificial snow per day.

Although the Vysočina Arena has space for up to 14,000 spectators according to the IBU , the World Cup in Nové Město claims to have the highest attendance figures of the winter. The organizer states that there are sometimes more than 35,000 spectators at the competitions.

Events

Men's mass start at the 2013 World Cup

The first international competitions took place in the Vysočina Arena in January 2007, when two sprint races and a pursuit race were held as part of the IBU Cup 2006/07 (then still the European Cup ). Further IBU Cups were held in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Nové Město was also the venue for the 2008 European Biathlon Championships and the 2014 European Biathlon Championships .

The first biathlon world cup took place from January 9th to 15th, 2012. Usually, one year before the biathlon world championships or the Olympic Games, at least one world cup is held at the location where the title fights will later take place. The 2013 Biathlon World Championships took place between February 6th and 17th, 2013. Further World Cups were held in 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2020.

Nové Město also hosted the 2009 European Summer Biathlon Championships , the 2011 Junior Biathlon World Championships and the 2011 Summer Biathlon World Championships .

Training center

The Vysočina Arena also serves as a training center for biathlon and cross-country skiing all year round. Some of the trails are paved for summer training so that they can also be used with roller skis .
