Gerard Pieter Hendrik van Velde (born November 30, 1971 in Wapenveld ) is a Dutch speed skater.

He had been one of the best Dutch speed skaters since the early 1990s , but just missed a medal at the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympics .

The introduction of folding ice skates began in the late 1990s. Van Velde couldn't get used to the new shoes and ended his career. However, the Dutch speed skater Rintje Ritsma was looking for a training partner and so van Velde began speed skating again and was even able to qualify for the Winter Olympics in 2002 , this time in Salt Lake City . There he surprisingly won the gold medal over 1000 meters with a world record.

Four years later, he was unable to qualify for the Turin Games.
