Ludwig Schwabl

Ludwig Schwabl (born May 1, 1921 in Inzell ; † April 7, 2007 there ) was a German politician and sports official. From 1966 to 1990 he served as 1st Mayor of Inzell and was a member of the SPD from 1970 to 1978 in the Bavarian State Parliament . He is considered to be one of the pioneers of speed skating in Germany. He significantly influenced the expansion of his home town into a center of German speed skating. From 1965 to 1972 he was chairman of the German Speed ​​Skating Association (DESG) and was appointed honorary chairman when he left this office.

Life

Schwabl was born the son of a farmer. After attending elementary and vocational school, he worked on his parents' farm. In 1938 he was initially assigned to the Reich Labor Service , and in the following year he was drafted into the Wehrmacht . After the outbreak of war he fought at the front in France. During the war against the Soviet Union in October 1941, he was so badly injured that his left lower leg had to be amputated. Immediately after the end of the war, on July 1, 1945, he joined the community of Inzell as an administrative clerk and, after attending the administrative school in 1946/47, rose to become manager in the following years.

Political career

In the early 1950s, Schwabl began to get involved politically at the local level. In 1952 he was elected for the first time as a candidate of the SPD in the district council of the Traunstein district, to which he belonged until his retirement in 1990. For 28 years he was parliamentary group leader of the SPD, from 1953 to 1966 and from 1984 to 1990 also deputy district administrator. In the local elections in March 1970, he ran for the office of district administrator, but lost just under 49.6 percent to his CSU opponent Leonhard Schmucker . In the same year he entered the Bavarian state parliament and was elected to the state sports advisory board on January 26, 1971. After two legislative terms, he decided not to run again in order to be able to concentrate more on the concerns of the municipality of Inzell, of which he was 1st mayor from 1966 to 1990. During his tenure as mayor, numerous infrastructural measures were taken, such as the establishment of the Federal Center for Ice Skating and Speed ​​Skating, the construction of a bathing center and a new sewage treatment plant, the establishment of the Critical Academy, the youth holiday village of the Bavarian State Sports Association (BLSV) and the holiday village of the Germans Post, the renovation of the hospital, the foundation of the music school and the new construction of the town hall.

Promotion of speed skating

In addition to his political activities, Schwabl has always been involved in promoting popular sports, especially speed skating . In 1959 he was one of the main initiators in the construction of the training facility for the German Ice Sports Association at Zwingsee . In the years 1963 to 1965 the first speed skating artificial ice rink in the Federal Republic of Germany was built on the site of the natural ice rink with the Inzell ice rink. The stadium was named Schwabls from 1995 to 2011, and the surrounding campus has been named after him since then. In 1965 he was the founding president of the German Speed ​​Skating Association, which he headed until 1972. When he left, he was elected honorary chairman of the association.
