Japan took part in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo with a delegation of 328 athletes (270 men and 58 women) in 155 competitions in 21 sports. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the freestyle swimmer Makoto Fukui .

With 29 medals, the host nation took third place in the medal table. The most successful athletes were the gymnasts Yukio Endo and Shūji Tsurumi , each with four medals. In the team competition, Takashi Ono , who swore the Olympic oath at the opening ceremony , won his 13th and final Olympic medal. His wife Kiyoko Ono won bronze with the women's team. The nation was also successful in volleyball, which was held for the first time: the women's team won the gold medal, the men won bronze, but were able to defeat the tournament winners from the Soviet Union. Furthermore, successes for Japan were achieved in judo, which was also on the agenda for the first time: The Japanese athlete was able to prevail in three of the four tournaments, only Akio Kaminaga had to admit defeat to the Dutchman Anton Geesink in the final of the Open Class .
