Takehide Nakatani
Takehide Nakatani ( Japanese 中 谷 雄 英 , Nakatani, Takehide ; born July 9, 1941 in Hiroshima ) is a former Japanese judoka . He was the first judo Olympic champion.
Career
The Olympic premiere of judo took place as part of the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo . From October 20th to October 23rd competitions were held in three weight classes and in the open class. On October 20, the first competition to be offered was the lightweight, weight class up to 68 kilograms. In the preliminary round the 1.65 m tall Nakatani defeated the Thai Udom Rasmelungon and the British Brian Jacks . The eight winners of the preliminary round groups then played a tournament with quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals. Nakatani defeated Paul Maruyama of the United States in the quarterfinals in 28 seconds. In the semifinals he defeated Oleg Stepanow from the Soviet Union after 4:25 minutes . In the final against the Swiss Eric Hänni , Nakatani needed 1:15 minutes to win the first Olympic Judo victory .
1966 Nakatani won the Japanese Judo Championships in the weight class up to 80 kilograms. 1967 Nakatani entered the world championships in Salt Lake City in the weight class up to 70 kilograms and won a bronze medal.
