Eric Hänni (born December 19, 1938 in Delsberg ) is a Swiss judoka and winner of an Olympic silver medal in 1964.

Sports career

Hänni began his career at JC Delemont and moved to Nippon Zurich, where he also won the Swiss team title with both teams. In 1959 he won his first championship title in lightweight, the then weight class under 68 kg. In 1964 he received the bronze medal at the European Judo Championships and won his third title after 1962 at the Swiss Championships. At the Olympic premiere in judo, Hänni won his first four fights and thus reached the final against the Japanese Takahide Nakatani . The Japanese won after 1:15 minutes and won the first gold medal in Olympic judo, Hänni received the silver medal and thus triggered a judo boom in Switzerland.

From 1965 there were new weight classes in judo and Hänni won his first title in the U-70 kg category in 1965. After two more titles in 1969 and 1970, he won the under 80 kg class in 1971. Hänni received his last medal at the Swiss championships in 1974 with a bronze in the lightweight.

Hänni worked as a judo trainer in Bern as early as the 1960s; later he was active internationally as a referee.
