Doris Gudrun Fuchs-Brause (born June 11, 1938 in Villingen in the Black Forest , German Empire as Doris Gudrun Fuchs ) is a former American gymnast .

Life

Doris Fuchs-Brause was born in Villingen in the Black Forest in 1938 and came to the United States with her family as a young teenager . There she began with the artistic gymnastics and started for the Rochester Turners and the Rochester Catholic Youth Organization .

At the Summer Olympics in 1956 and 1960 , she competed in several disciplines. In the all-around competition with the US team, she finished ninth both times. Her best individual result was an eighth place in the uneven bars competition in 1960 . At the Pan American Games in São Paulo in 1963 , she was able to win the gold medal in the disciplines of balance beam, uneven bars, and individual and team all-round competitions. For the Olympic Games in 1964 she was nominated as a substitute athlete, but was not used. In 1982 she was inducted into the Hall of Fame of American gymnasts .

Fuchs comes from a wealthy family and, in addition to gymnastics, also trained javelin and triple jump . Her sister Inge was also a gymnast. At the 1960 Olympic Games, she became friends with the Soviet boxer Boris Nikonorov . She visited Nikonorov's family in 1963 when she was competing in Moscow. The two sent each other letters and gifts and hoped to see each other again at the 1964 games, but Nikonorov had to cancel because he had broken his toe while playing football a month earlier.
