Here Are the Young Men is a drama directed by Eoin Macken that premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh in July 2020. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Rob Doyle.

action

When the three teenagers Matthew, Rez and Kearney finished school in Dublin in 2003, they began a summer of alcohol and drugs. Matthew misses his girlfriend Jen, but at the same time strives to maintain his friendship with the increasingly troubled Kearney. Her precocious boyfriend Rez succumbs to paranoia and depression, damaging his relationship with girlfriend Julie.

When the three boys observe a traffic accident in which a child dies, this traumatic event causes the trio to gradually fall apart. Matthew in particular begins to question his friendship with Kearney, especially when Kearney harasses a homeless man and turns to drugs. Jen seems much more mature than the three boys and tells Matthew that he shouldn't be ashamed of his sensitive nature.

The film is based on the novel Here Are the Young Men by Rob Doyle. Claire Kilroy of the Guardian writes about the year 2003, in which the three protagonists in the book experienced a summer, back then no economic storm clouds had darkened the horizon, there was full employment in Ireland and emigration was not a necessity, but a question of lifestyle. The novel paints a portrait of the happiest generation of Irish children ever born. Doyle is presenting a youth culture in Dublin that has hardly changed since the 1980s. So the teenagers heard the same music as the generations of goths and rockers before them, Joy Division , Pixies and the Ramones . Even the techno is the same that it has been around since primary school. The only thing new to this generation is the internet, according to Kilroy. They use it for video games and for watching porn, and those distractions further alienated the boys from society and clouded their view of reality. The title Here Are the Young Men refers to a song by Joy Division that was released on VHS in 1982 as a video with live tracks.

Directed by Eoin Macken , who also wrote the script. Dean-Charles Chapman , Ferdia Walsh-Peelo and Finn Cole can be seen in the roles of the three male protagonists Matthew, Rez and Kearney. Anya Taylor-Joy plays Jen. Ralph Ineson , Susan Lynch and Travis Fimmel can also be seen in other roles .

James Mather acted as cameraman .

The score was composed by Ryan Potesta , a multi-instrumentalist and composer who has also worked with Collective Soul, Need2Breathe, Rehab and Ed Roland in the past.

The film was first shown on July 11, 2020 at the virtual Galway Film Fleadh.

Reviews

Davide Abbatescianni from the online film magazine Cineuropa writes that overall the drama is characterized by a gripping narrative pace as well as a powerful score and a dynamic camera that accurately reproduces the turbulent lives of these three young men. As a recurring element, Abbatescianni notices the fictional television show Big Show! whose crazy moderator recklessly promotes behavior of the worst kind. While these interruptions may seem a bit excessive at first, they were effectively used to visualize the characters' distorted perception of themselves and the reality surrounding them.
