Ivan Vasilyevich Kochergin
Ivan Vasilyevich Kotschergin ( Russian Иван Васильевич Кочергин ; born December 29, 1935 in Kamensk-Shakhtinsky , Rostov Oblast , southern Russia ; † May 30, 2015 ) was a Soviet- Russian wrestler . He was a bronze medalist at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics .
Career
Ivan Kochergin began wrestling as a teenager and was delegated to the wrestling center in Rostov-on-Don in the mid-1950s, when he showed his great talent for this sport . There he developed into an excellent wrestler in the Greco-Roman style. In 1960 he was the first Soviet flyweight champion before Nail Garajew and Armais Sajadow . He was then sent to the Olympic Games in Rome , but could not win a medal there. He played five fights in Rome, of which he won two and tied twice. Iwan lost to the Iranian Mohammad Paziraye and came in 5th place.
In 1961 he was 1st winner in the Soviet Union Spartakiad in flyweight, but was initially no longer used in international championships in the next few years.
In 1960 and 1961 he took part in four international matches against the Federal Republic of Germany , winning against Fritz Stange from Untertürkheim , Paul Neff from Schifferstadt and Rolf Lacour from Köllerbach . He also drew once against Neff.
In 1968 he was surprisingly used again after a long break, Soviet flyweight champion and at the European Championships in Västerås . There he presented himself in excellent form, won five fights and fought against Petar Kirov from Bulgaria , which was enough to win the title.
At the Olympic Games of the same year in Mexico City , Iwan was not used in fly, but in bantamweight. In this weight class, however, he could not prevail. He won four fights, tied once, but lost to Ion Baciu from Romania and János Varga from Hungary and won the bronze medal.
In 1969 Iwan won the Spartakiad of the friendly forces of the Warsaw Pact states. In 1971 he represented the Soviet Union again at the World Flyweight Championships in Sofia, won his first four fights convincingly, but then retired in the 5th round due to a premature defeat against Jan Michalik from Poland and took 5th place.
