Zigmas Jukna
Zigmas jukna ( Russian Зигмас Пранович Юкна * 13. July 1935 in Palūksčiai , Telšiai District Municipality , Lithuania , † 7. October 1980 in Vilnius , Lithuanian SSR ) was a Soviet rowers won the International in the 1960s ten medals.
Athletic career
The 1.84 m tall Zigmas Jukna from Žalgiris Vilnius won his first international medal at the 1960 Olympic Games , when he won silver in two with coxswain behind the German two with Antanas Bagdonavičius and helmsman Igor Rudakow . Jukna rowed with Antanas Bagdonavičius until 1968, Igor Rudakow was there again at Jukna's last medal win in 1969. In 1961 Jukna and Bagdonavičius won their first European championship with Gerdas Morhus in a controlled two-man. In 1962, the two Lithuanian rowers switched to eighth and won silver at the first rowing world championships . Also at the European rowing championships in 1963 and 1964, the Soviet eighth won the silver medal behind the Germany eighth . With fifth place in eighth, the 1964 Olympic Games were the only medalless international rowing championship of the 1960s for Jukna.
In 1965 Wolodymyr Sterlyk , Antanas Bagdonavičius, Zigmas Jukna and Juozas Jagelavičius switched from eight to four without a helmsman and won gold in this boat class at the European Championships in 1965 and World Championship silver in 1966 behind the boat from the GDR . In 1967 the four rowers with helmsman Juri Lorenzson won the European championship in the four with helmsman . After bronze in the eighth behind the Germany eighth and the Australians at the 1968 Olympic Games , Jukna won again in 1969 European championship silver behind the GDR eighth.
Jukna died of a brain tumor in 1980.
