Vytautas Briedis
Julius Vytautas Briedis (born August 27, 1940 in Nausėdžiai , Lithuanian SSR ; † September 22, 2019 in Vilnius , Lithuania ) was a Soviet rower who won an Olympic bronze medal in 1968.
Athletic career
The 1.89 m tall Vytautas Briedis from Žalgiris Vilnius won the silver medal with the Soviet eighth at the 1962 World Championships in Lucerne behind the Germany eighth . Also at the European Championships in 1963 and 1964 Briedis won the silver medal behind the German boat with the Soviet eighth.
At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, the boats from Germany, Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union won the preliminary runs, three other boats reached the finals via the hope runs. In the final, the Soviet eighth finished fifth, over five seconds behind the third-placed Czechoslovaks.
At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, Briedis rowed eighth in the Soviet eight like four years earlier. In the preliminary run, the Soviet eight took third place behind the boats from New Zealand and the GDR. With a second place behind Australia, the crew reached the final. There the Germany eight won with a second ahead of the Australians, another second behind the Soviet team won the bronze medal.
Briedis won six Soviet championship titles in rowing from 1961 to 1965 and 1969, he was second in 1966 and 1967 and third in 1970. After his career, Briedis worked as a rowing trainer and functionary, initially at Dinamo Vilnius and in the Lithuanian rowing association. From 1990 he was in the Lithuanian Sports Federation and later director of the Center of Olympic Sports.
