Antanas Bagdonavičius ( Russian Антанас Леонович Багдонавичюс ; born June 15, 1938 in Bobėnai , Utena district , Lithuania ) is a former Soviet rower who won nine international medals in the 1960s.

Athletic career

The 1.87 m tall Antanas Bagdonavičius from Žalgiris Vilnius won his first international medal at the 1960 Olympic Games , when he won silver in two with coxswain behind the German two with Zigmas Jukna and helmsman Igor Rudakow . Bagdonavičius rowed with Zigmas Jukna until the end of his sporting career in 1968. In 1961 Jukna and Bagdonavičius won their first European championship with Gerdas Morhus in a controlled two-man. In 1962, the two Lithuanian rowers switched to eighth and won silver at the first rowing world championships . Also at the European rowing championships in 1963 and 1964, the Soviet eighth won the silver medal behind the Germany eighth . With fifth place in eighth, the 1964 Olympic Games were Bagdonavičius' only medalless international rowing championship.

In 1965 Wolodymyr Sterlyk , Antanas Bagdonavičius, Zigmas Jukna and Juozas Jagelavičius switched from eight to four without a helmsman and won gold in this boat class at the European Championships in 1965 and World Championship silver in 1966 behind the boat from the GDR . In 1967 the four rowers with helmsman Juri Lorenzson won the European championship in the four with helmsman . After bronze in eighth behind the Germany eighth and the Australians at the 1968 Olympic Games , Bagdonavičius ended his active career. Both Jukna and Bagdonavičius were active as officials in rowing after their careers.
