Silvano Bertini (born March 27, 1940 in Signa , Italy ) is a former Italian welterweight boxer .

amateur

Bertini was Italian welterweight champion in 1962 and 1964. In 1963 he finished second at the European Championships in Moscow , where he was defeated in the final against Richardas Tamulis from the Soviet Union . In the same year he won the gold medal at the Mediterranean Games in Naples . When he participated in the Tokyo Olympics in 1964 , he won the bronze medal in the welterweight division. After victories over Frederick Desrosiers, Canada (DQ 1st), Hussein Saddik, Egypt (5-0), and Michael Varley, United Kingdom(KO 2.), he lost in the semifinals just on points (3: 2) against the eventual Olympic champion Marian Kasprzyk , Poland .

professional

In 1965 he turned professional and started with a series of 23 victories, including the victory over Domenico Tiberia , which earned him the Italian championship title. The rematch against Tiberia ended in a draw, so Bertini kept his title. With a knockout in the thirteenth round against Edwin "Fighting Mack" Arthur from the Netherlands Antilles , he became European champion in January 1969. But in May of the same year he lost the title again to the French Jean Josselin through a technical knockout in the eighth round. In November 1970 he managed a points victory over Eddie Blay . Another chance at the European Championship was given to Bertini in November 1971. But he lost the fight against the French Roger Menetrey by technical knockout in the thirteenth round.

Bertini tried his luck in the light middleweight division and was promptly Italian champion in July 1972. Then in August 1973 he wanted to reach the absolute climax of his career: the World Championship according to the WBA and WBC versions. But the Japanese Kōichi Wajima defeated him by technical knockout in the twelfth round and ended his career.
