The 5th men's field hockey world championship was held from December 29, 1981 to January 12, 1982 in Bombay and was the last world championship that was held on natural grass . Twelve teams took part in the tournament, which were initially divided into two groups. There were two points for a win. After beating Germany 3-1 in the final, Pakistan became world champions for the third time (after 1971 and 1978).
