Sohail Abbas

Sohail Abbas (born June 9, 1975 in Karachi ) is a former Pakistani field hockey player . The defender, who is known as a penalty corner specialist, was the captain of the Pakistan national hockey team and with 348 goals is the most successful goalscorer in international field hockey.

Life

Sohail Abbas comes from a family of athletes. His father, Syed Iftikhar Hussain, was a first-class - Cricketer who played for Karachi at the national level. Sohail is the eldest of three brothers and got into hockey through his uncle. His potential as a hockey player was initially not recognized, and he found it difficult to gain a foothold in the 1995-98 national hockey league. However, he was part of the Pakistan Junior Squad and was appointed to the squad in 1997. He made his debut in the national team in 1998, scored a total of 20 goals that year and led his team to silver in the Asia Cup . However, since he was only used for the penalty corners, he was not yet able to demonstrate all his skills at this time.

In 1999 Sohail Abbas scored a total of 10 goals against India and 12 goals in the Azlan Shah Cup . Against Spain , he scored his 50th goal in the same year and cracked the world record for the most goals in a calendar year with 60 goals. After Sohail Abbas in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney had already scored the most goals (11), he broke in 2004 in Athens , even the ten-year-old record of Hassan Sardar . In July 2004 he played his 200th international game against the Netherlands . On October 8, 2004, he also scored his 267th goal in a friendly against India in Amritsar , setting the Dutchman Paul Litjens' 22-year-old record . In the same year he also announced his retirement, but returned to the team in 2006.

Sohail Abbas was considered one of the best penalty corner shooters in the world during his career. He was nominated for FIH Player of the Year in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 , but never won the award. Abbas also holds the fastest 100 goals record that he set against England in the 2000 Olympics . In 2002 he scored a total of 44 goals and in 2003 a total of 28 goals.

In 2010 Sohail Abbas led Pakistan to win the hockey tournament at the Asian Games. This was the second title at the Asian Games after 1990 and the first since winning the Champions Trophy in 1994 . In October 2013 Abbas signed a contract with the Punjab Sports Club from Hong Kong .
