The civil armory is located in Vienna's First District, Inner City, on Am Hof, number 10.

history

It was built by the City of Vienna on the area of the former Jewish meat yard in order to store a municipal weapon supply for the defense of Vienna and was used from 1562. Around 1676 a neighboring house was added. In 1731/32 the main facade in particular was heavily redesigned. In 1809 the French looted the weapons stores and during the revolution of 1848 the National Guard had their headquarters here . After the completion of the New Town Hall on Vienna's Ringstrasse , the weapons and trophies stored here were exhibited in the local civic weapons museum. The rooms that became free were made available to the Viennese professional fire brigade, founded in 1685 .

The inscription: ANNO MDCCXXXII can be found on the two capitals of the side pillars, with the imperial eagle in between with the Vienna city arms on the chest. Right at the top of the flat end of the front wall rises a square base with the inscription: Imperante Carolo VI. instauravit SPQV Two figures standing on this base, which represent bravery and perseverance, carry a ball marked with two intertwined Cs and the number VI. Seven other, more decorative stone figures are also distributed on the facade.

On June 21, 2007, the tower crane erected for renovation work on the central fire station was blown over by a gust of wind and hurled onto the former civil armory. The crane operator was killed and the armory was badly damaged.
