Walter Hummelberger

Walter Hummelberger (born September 16, 1913 in Kladno , Austria-Hungary , † June 7, 1995 in Vienna ) was an Austrian historian and important weapons expert . He was head of the weapons collection of the Historical Museum of the City of Vienna .

Life

Hummelberger was born in 1913 in Bohemia as the son of Franz Hummelberger , who was general manager of Poldi Hütte from 1932 to 1945 . From 1932 to 1936 he studied modern history and folklore at the German University in Prague and in 1936 at Heinz Zatschek and Anton Ernst Berger with the dissertation The Battle of Marengo to Dr. phil. PhD.

From 1936 to 1938 he did military service in the Czechoslovak Army ; his last rank was a second lieutenant in the reserve. In 1940 he was provisional director of the previously established branch of the German Army Archives in Prague for a few months ; he was followed by Lieutenant General Hans Lieber , a close associate of General of the Artillery Friedrich von Rabenau . Then Hummelberger became head of the registry department. He, who was considered "politically unreliable", was not accepted as an officer in the Wehrmacht , instead he served as a sergeant in the 136th Mountain Division of the 2nd Mountain Division during World War II .

After the end of the war he had to leave his home . In November 1945 he initially became an unpaid volunteer in the Vienna War Archives . From 1947 he was a civil servant in the Historical Museum of the City of Vienna , where he was responsible for the weapons collection. In 1964 he was promoted to senior councilor. In 1973 he retired from service.

Hummelberger was u. a. Contributor to the Jedlicka volume Our Army, 300 Years of Austrian Soldierhood (1963) and author of several articles in the Neue Deutsche Biographie and in the Austrian Biographical Lexicon 1815–1950 .

In 1963 he was awarded the Theodor Körner Prize , and in 1971 he was given the title of " Professor ".
