Samvel Grigorjewitsch Kotscharjanz ( Armenian Սամվել Գրիգորի Քոչարյանց , Russian Самвел Григорьевич Кочарянц ; born January 7 . Jul / 20th January  1909 greg. In New Beyazid ; † 4. August 1993 in Sarov ) was an Armenian - Soviet electrical engineer and nuclear technician .

Life

Kocharyanz was the sixth child in an Armenian family. He began his studies at the University of Yerevan , which banned him from studying after being denounced . He then went to Moscow in 1930 and worked in Factory No. 24. From 1933 he studied electrical engineering at the Moscow Energy Institute (MEI) , graduating in 1937. He stayed there as an aspirant , attended lectures at the Chair of Theoretical Electrical Engineering and became a candidate in 1941 in science . He then worked at the MEI as a lecturer .

After the end of the German-Soviet War , Kocharyanz worked in occupied Germany to take over the German uranium project . From September 1947 he worked as part of the Soviet atomic bomb project in the secret nuclear research institute KB-11 in Arsamas-16 on the development of nuclear weapons as head of the department for system automation. He designed the ignition mechanism for the first Soviet atomic bomb . The development of the hydrogen bomb followed . In 1958 Kocharyanz received his doctorate in technical sciences without a dissertation . In 1959 he became the main designer.

In 1962 Kocharyanz was appointed professor. He expanded his activities and founded departments for ballistics , for mechanics and micromechanics and for optics and light guides . In 1966, in addition to his work in Arsamas-16, he became scientific director of the branch in Gorki for the design and construction of radio-technical devices, especially sensors (until 1973).

While Kocharyanz was still alive , his bronze bust was set up in the central square of his hometown Gawar .
