Regional and long-distance transport

Supraregional motorway network

Main roads (at least four lanes) in and around Mannheim

The A 6 runs to the north and east ( Saarbrücken - Mannheim - Heilbronn - Nuremberg ). From here the A 67 branches off at the Viernheimer Dreieck towards Frankfurt am Main . Further to the east, the A 5 runs parallel (Frankfurt - Heidelberg - Karlsruhe - Basel ). Together with the A 61 on the left bank of the Rhine (Cologne - Koblenz - Ludwigshafen - Hockenheim triangle ) in the west, they create supra-regional connections in all directions.

Mannheim-Ludwigshafen motorway ring

The A 6 closely encloses the north and east of the Mannheim urban area. Together with the A 61 further away from the city, which runs to the west and south, it forms an outer motorway ring around Mannheim and Ludwigshafen .

The completion of a narrower motorway ring in the south was not realized. A connection of the B 9 at Ludwigshafen-Rheingönheim over the Rhine to the Rhein-Neckar Schnellweg ( B 38a ) is not in prospect.

Connections to Mannheim

The northern part of the city is connected to the Hessian Ried via the B 44 , and with the Mannheim-Sandhofen junction it also connects to the A 6.

In the east, the two radial branch highways A 659 and A 656 connect Mannheim city center to the north-south highways and at the same time connect them as crossbars. The A 659 replaces part of the B 38 and runs from Mannheim-Käfertal further northeast via Viernheim to Weinheim . It intersects the A 6 at the Viernheimer Kreuz and the A 5 at the Weinheim interchange . The A 656 runs from the city center further southeast to Heidelberg . It intersects the A 6 at the Mannheim motorway junction and the A 5 at the Heidelberg motorway junction .

In the south, the B 36 and the adjoining B 535 connect the city with Schwetzingen and the southern Electoral Palatinate and via the Mannheim / Schwetzingen junction with the A 6 in the south.

Mannheim can be reached from the west via the A 650 , which extends to the city limits of Ludwigshafen. From there, the two four-lane federal highways 44 and 37 on the Rhine lead over the Kurt-Schumacher and Konrad-Adenauer bridges to the center of Mannheim.

city traffic

An environmental zone has existed in Mannheim city center since March 1, 2008 . Most of the residential areas are designed as 30 km / h zones . The flow of traffic is positively influenced by cheap, time-differentiated traffic light switching ( green wave ) on the main roads of the city . The B 36 is routed south of Mannheim main station as a southern bypass to the city center, including through the Fahrlach tunnel .
