Neckarau transition

The Neckarau crossing is a road bridge in Mannheim , which leads about one kilometer east of the main station over the access tracks of the Rheintalbahn and Riedbahn . It connects the districts of Lindenhof , Almenhof , Neckarau on the south with Schwetzingerstadt / Oststadt and the B 37 on the north.

history

The Neckarau crossing was opened to traffic on March 30, 1887. On the Mannheim city map from 1890 ascending driveways (ramps) with an overpass structure as a connection between Schwetzinger Strasse and Neckarauer Strasse are drawn. These included the Mannheim – Heidelberg line, opened in 1840 as part of the Rheintalbahn, the Rheinbahn built in 1870 via Schwetzingen to Karlsruhe and the Riedbahn completed in 1880 via Mannheim-Käfertal to Frankfurt. The route of the road, coming from Schwetzinger Strasse, roughly corresponded to the current route.

In 1903 the tram route Schwetzingerstadt Viehhofstraße – Neckarau Bahnhof was put into operation (→ see article Tram Mannheim / Ludwigshafen ).

From 1933 the bridge was renewed. The iron construction was carried out by the Reichsbahn , the new abutments , the ramp conversion and the bridge covering through the city. This steel truss bridge, completed in 1935, was damaged in the Second World War and renovated in the 1950s. In 2008 it had to make room for a subsequent building due to progressive corrosion damage due to demolition. A temporary bridge was built right next to it for a total of 28 months of construction.

Bridge approach, Neckarau side

Since June 2009 , the new steel truss bridge designed by the Frankfurt architects Speer has replaced the old construction. Since it is six meters wider, a separate track for trams and buses could be set up in the middle of the street . In addition, with a clearance height of 6.20 meters above the tracks of the railway, trains can pass under it at higher speeds.

Connection to the southern bypass

In the summer of 2012, the traffic routing on the southern ramp of the Neckarau crossing was changed with a new tram stop University and an access and exit leading to and from the southern bypass ( B 36 ) was implemented. The measures were carried out as part of the Glückstein-Quartier project to connect to the new southern bypass between the Victoria Tower and the Fahrlachtunnel along the railway.
