Neckarau ( Mannemerisch : Neggara [ nɛga.rɑː ]) is a district of Mannheim in the Rhine-Neckar triangle . In addition, Neckarau designates the district in which the district is located.

Borough

The Neckarau district is located in the southwest of Mannheim, directly on the Rhine . It includes the Neckarau district as well as the Almenhof and Niederfeld districts . The neighboring districts are Lindenhof , Neuhermsheim and Rheinau . Ludwigshafen and Altrip are on the opposite side of the Rhine .

The Neckarau district, part of the Neckarau district, is delimited in the northwest by Rheingoldstrasse from the Niederfeld district and by Rottfeldstrasse and Voltastrasse from the Almenhof district. In the northeast, the district boundary to Neuhermsheim runs roughly in the middle of the marshalling yard . In the east Neckarau borders along the B 38a on the Mallau district, in the southeast on the Casterfeld district of the Rheinau district and in the south on the municipality of Altrip on the other side of the Rhine. In a westerly direction Neckarau ends in the forest park just before the lido that belongs to the Niederfeld.

The Neckarau district is divided into 4 statistical districts: Neckarau-Nordost, Neckarau-Südost, Neckarau-Süd and Neckarau-Mitte.

Name origin

Historic mouths

Neckarau is closer to the Rhine than the Neckar , but the Neckar gave it its name. In contrast to today, this flowed into the Rhine during the Carolingian era . The place Neckarau was on an island within the estuary delta. Due to its location, Neckarau was regularly in danger of being inundated by floods. At the end of the 13th century, the Neckar moved its main arm north of Mannheim city center.

history

In 368 the castle of the Alta Ripa fort (Altrip) was located in what is now the Neckarau district. In 871 Neckarau was first mentioned in a document as "Naucrauia". In 1212, Emperor Friedrich II gave Neckarau to the Bishop of Worms . After lengthy disputes, the place came to the Electoral Palatinate in 1284 .

Around the year 1278 the Neckar changed its course and since then flows north of the city into the Rhine. As a result, the neighboring village of Hermsheim was abandoned and the residents moved to Neckarau. It had been located southwest of today's Mannheim motorway junction in the "Kloppenheimer Feld". Winning names such as "At the (Hermsheimer) Church" still indicate this.

In the 15th century Neckarau was coveted as a trading center because of its ideal location on the Rhine and became one of the largest and richest villages in the region. In 1496 Neckarau came to the Electoral Palatinate Oberamt Heidelberg . In 1577 there were 101 households. Neckarau was destroyed in 1689 during the War of the Palatinate Succession . In 1817 there were finally 1,253 inhabitants in the place. In the second half of the 19th century, due to the adjacent Mannheim-Karlsruhe railway line, many industrial companies settled here. In 1899 Neckarau - as the largest Baden village at the time - was incorporated into Mannheim. The residential development in the Almenhof began after the First World War, that of the Niederfeld after the Second World War.

Politics, administration

According to the main statute of the city of Mannheim, the city district has a district advisory council that includes 14 residents who are appointed by the local council according to the results of the local council elections. They are to be heard on important matters that affect the municipality and advise the local administration and committees of the municipal council.

As one of the eleven outer city districts, Neckarau has a municipal secretariat, which is responsible for local administrative tasks.

The coat of arms developed from the court seal, which can be traced back to 1520. It shows the waves of the Neckar below and the row of plants in a floodplain above.

Culture and sights

Buildings

The two church buildings, the Catholic St. Jakobus Church , whose 100th anniversary was celebrated in 2007, and the Protestant St. Matthew Church are characteristic of the cityscape . Both parishes are supporting pillars in the life of Neckarau: Through church services and numerous events for all age groups, they give impulses for daily life, donate space for the contemplative and cultural and offer many occasions for meeting and celebrating.

But the industrial location Neckarau also shapes the cityscape. The large power station on the Rhine was built here in 1921. Since the late eighties, the old industrial site Neckarau has been undergoing a process of change, in the course of which a new industrial park was created.

The neo-Gothic old pumping station, which was built in 1903 and closed in 1986, is an eclectic clinker building reminiscent of northern Germany, in which the technical interior fittings could be completely preserved. It was restored from 2001 by the Mannheim artist Dietmar Brixy and used as a studio. It is a technical cultural monument and was named " Monument of the Month February 2004" by the Monument Foundation Baden-Württemberg .

The August-Bebel-Park is located in the center between Neckarau and Almenhof . In the Almenhof district there is the tree-lined 48-person sports field, which is used by many people. The forest park with the nature reserves “ Silberpappel ” and “ Reissinsel ” lies in the Rhine loop . The Mannheimer Strandbad is located south of the Reißinsel in the forest park. The Aufeld with its allotment gardens and meadows borders the forest park. Numerous clubs have their sports facilities in this area.

There is an indoor swimming pool near the large power plant. The Stollenwörthweiher offers two outdoor pools for the summer . The lido in the forest park is very popular in the summer months. The Mannheim-Neckarau riding community is also located near the forest park. Neckarau is home to many smaller cafés and restaurants . The civic engagement in Neckarau is also remarkable. There are a lot of associations that are all organized in the Neckarau Association and bring life to the district.

Economy and Infrastructure

Companies

The large Mannheim power plant is located in Neckarau . Other historically significant companies are Kabel und Draht ( Südkabel ) and formerly Joseph Vögele AG, Seilwolff and Rheinische Gummi- and Celluloid-Fabrik with their Schildkröt dolls. The Baktat International, a group of companies in the food trade, has its headquarters in Mannheim-Neckarau.

From 2011 to 2015, Juan Amador ran the three Michelin-starred restaurant "Amador" on the former Schildkröt factory site.

Altriper ferry

The public transport operates the RNV with the tram lines 1, 3 and 8. There are also several bus lines. The Neckarau stop is served by local rail transport. In the medium term, it is to be integrated into the RheinNeckar S-Bahn . It is planned to relocate the platforms to the southeast. This should make it easy to change between city buses, light rail vehicles and S-Bahn trains.

The neighboring town of Altrip can be reached via the Rhine ferry Altrip – Mannheim , which is served by a minibus line. A line of the Busverkehr Rhein-Neckar GmbH connects Mannheim with Brühl , Ketsch and Schwetzingen via Neckarau and Rheinau.

The four-lane B 36 provides the connection to the city center and in the other direction to the A 6 and A 656 motorways .

media

The daily newspaper Mannheimer Morgen reports on Neckarau in its "Süd" edition. The “Neckarau-Almenhof-Nachrichten” is distributed free of charge to all households in the district. In the districts of Almenhof and Niederfeld the district newspaper “Lindenhof aktuell” is distributed to households.

Public facilities

In August-Bebel-Park there is a branch of the city library. The Deaconess Hospital Mannheim , into which the former Heinrich Lanz Hospital was integrated, is located in Niederfeld . The Almenhof district is also home to one of 144 Goethe Institutes worldwide . In the so-called Waldorf triangle is the leisure school, a free culture and education center based on anthroposophy and Waldorf education. The Neckarau department of the Mannheim volunteer fire brigade is housed in the Mannheim main fire station in the Almenhof district.
