The Mannheim fire brigade takes on fire and disaster control for Mannheim . Unlike other fire brigades (e.g. in Berlin ), however, there is no rescue service . The fire brigade consists of a department of the professional fire brigade (distributed over three guards), eight departments of the volunteer fire brigade and a department of the youth fire brigade.

A completely new concept for a motor vehicle syringe developed by the Mannheim Fire Department became the basis for the standardization of fire fighting vehicles in 1934. Among other things, it stipulated that the firefighters had to sit in a closed cabin and no longer on an open vehicle, that all equipment had to be stowed in a closed structure and that the vehicle had to be equipped with a diesel engine.

The firefighter home set in 1955 in Germany as the first fire department, the system of Wechsellader vehicles one. From 2002 to 2006 it was one of four pilot sites of the Analytical Task Force of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief . It also hosted the annual conference of the Association for the Promotion of German Fire Protection (vfdb) twice , in 1952 and 2009.

history

Old fire station

As early as 1849 efforts were made to found a fire brigade in Mannheim. The then sovereign, Grand Duke Leopold, expected the firefighters to distance themselves clearly from the ideas of the Baden Revolution when they joined the fire service , which was unanimously rejected. Only after the revolution was a volunteer fire brigade with 500 members founded in Mannheim on November 11, 1851 . This began its work in April 1852 and carried out its first main exercise in September.

On August 15, 1891, the volunteer fire brigade was expanded to include full-time firefighters. The professional fire brigade was initially housed in the old department store on square N 1 and was moved to the building yard at the end of 1894. The main fire station was now in the city center, in squares U 2 and U 3. In 1910, the municipal building department decided to build a new building on the strategically more favorable northern bank of the Neckar . In 1912 the company moved to today's " Alte Feuerwache " at what is now the " Alte Meßplatz ". In 1975 the professional fire brigade moved from there to the station in the Lindenhof district until the end of March 2017. The current "main fire station" is a few hundred meters away on Neckarauer Strasse in the Almenhof district . The "Alte Feuerwache" has served as a cultural center since 1981. Among other things, it is now the venue for the “ Schnawwl ” youth theater of the Mannheim National Theater .

The Mannheim professional fire brigade is currently spread over three guards in the city. The "main fire station" in the Almenhof district. The other two bases are "Wache Nord" in Mannheim-Käfertal and "Wache Süd" in Mannheim-Rheinau .

The number of departments of the volunteer fire brigade grew with the incorporation of the surrounding villages: with Neckarau 1899, Feudenheim 1910, Rheinau 1913, Wallstadt 1929 and Seckenheim and Friedrichsfeld 1930, the teams located there were also integrated into the Mannheim fire brigade. On the other hand, the North Department was founded in 1974 from a former directing unit of the air protection auxiliary service.

The professional fire brigade, which is organized in three shifts, is spread over three locations in the Mannheim city area: Wache Süd in Mannheim Rheinau, the main fire station in the Almenhof district and Wache Nord in Mannheim-Käfertal. In addition to a fire brigade from the professional fire brigade, one or two voluntary fire brigade departments are stationed on each of the three guards . The 2007 annual report shows 233 officers on duty - with a total of 260 employees. There are 46 civil servants on duty per shift, 41 in the evenings and on weekends. In addition there are 5 officers for the command services at any time. The reduced number of employees is compensated by a group of the volunteer fire brigade, which is on standby during this time.

The main fire station is - in addition to the officers of the fire engine - and above all the administration of Office 37 (fire brigade and disaster control). The control center and the respiratory protection center are also located at this location. The preventive fire protection with the subject “lower supervisory authority for the chimney sweep in Mannheim” has its seat here. Thus, the Mannheim fire brigade is the direct, superordinate employer of the authorized district chimney sweeps in the city of Mannheim. This is unique in Germany.

The main focus of the Käfertaler Wache - not directly related to fire fighting technology - is the (vehicle) workshop and the area of technology (radio workshop, electrical workshop and replenishment store for technical equipment). In addition, Wache Nord monitors the Käfertal forest for possible fires.

In addition to the emergency service, the Mannheim fire fighters mainly train here. The Mannheim Volunteer Fire Brigade is made up of nine departments: eight active and the youth fire department . The latter, however, is again divided between the eight departments mentioned first.

One of the special tasks of the Mannheim Volunteer Fire Brigade is to look after the city 's emergency drinking water supplies .

In addition, the fire brigade in Mannheim is called upon to perform fire safety guards in the Mannheim National Theater , in the Mannheim Rosengarten , as well as at events in the SAP Arena or on the Maimarkt area .

In 2007 the foolish anniversary was celebrated. The desire to expand the fire station is known for a long time , as there are neither separate toilets nor shower facilities for the comrades. Since 2007, the comrades have been making an effort publicly by promoting the project in the press and in politics. In 2014, budget funds were then approved and the first planning discussions took place in early 2015. As a suitable place for a new building has not yet been found, a temporary solution with a container extension was approved. This project and the refurbishment of the sanitary rooms lasted until mid-2017.

Feudenheim department (FE)

The Feudenheim department has 30 members and has a fire fighting vehicle 10, a fire fighting vehicle 20 KatS from municipal procurement and a 3000 tank fire engine. In addition, Mannheim Central Station is one of six locations for the rail rescue trains . In the event of an emergency, the train is manned by the Mannheim fire brigade (full-time staff and volunteers) as well as by the Schwetzingen volunteer fire brigade , supplemented by two engine drivers who are always ready for action by the railway. The ambulance compartment of the rescue train is occupied by the Johanniter Accident Aid.

City Fire Brigade Association Mannheim e. V.

In 1997 the City Fire Brigade Association (SFV) Mannheim e. V., which has set itself the task of representing the fire brigades in Mannheim politically, promoting the fire brigade in public, training the fire fighters and improving the cohesion of the various emergency services in Mannheim. Members of the association can be the voluntary departments and plant fire departments as a unit as well as individual professional fire fighters . The association also has supporting members.

Probably the most conspicuous public relations work was the fire brigade booth on the Mannheim Maimarkt , which most recently brought together all human rescue organizations under the motto “close ranks” in one booth.

In 2008 there was a break between the 1st chairman of the SFV and the departments of the volunteer fire brigade, the reasons for which were attached to the chairman but not published. After clarifying discussions failed to defuse the situation, all eight departments of the Mannheim Volunteer Fire Brigade withdrew from the association on December 31, 2008.
