The fire department Stuttgart as part of the fire department an organ of the municipal fire authorities of Baden-Wuerttemberg state capital Stuttgart .

history

Before the Stuttgart professional fire brigade was founded in 1891, there was a voluntary fire brigade in Stuttgart and in the suburbs of Karlsvorstadt Heslach, the suburb of Berg and the suburb of Gablenberg there were independent volunteer fire brigades with their own deployment districts. In 1873 the first pure fire station in Stuttgart was built for the volunteer fire brigade founded in 1852. As early as 1888, today's fire station 1 was built for the 1st battalion of the Stuttgart volunteer fire department before the professional fire department was actually established . After the professional fire brigade was founded in 1891, the building served as a hostel for 31 firefighters, six horses and a hand-held sprayer, a hydrant car, a machine ladder and a team car. After three years, the professional fire brigade took up the ambulance and kept it up until 1943, when it had to be handed over to the German Red Cross due to the war.

In 1897, with the dissolution of the volunteer fire brigade and the associated commissioning of a second professional fire station, the urban area was divided into two guard districts. In Wache 1, which was now called the City Main Fire Station , the staff was increased and a steam syringe was also stationed.

In October 1906, after the incorporation of Cannstatt the year before, the 3rd fire station of the professional fire brigade was put into operation. A short time later, the water rescue service was also introduced there. The crew consisted of 16 men, six horses, a team car, a turntable ladder, a steam pump and a prison car.

In 1913 the first automobile syringe was procured in the Kingdom of Württemberg . By 1920 the entire fleet was converted to fire trucks.

Due to the steady increase in staff and vehicles, a larger guard had to be built in Cannstatt, which was inaugurated in 1938 as the largest and most modern fire station.

The fourth professional fire station went into operation on March 10, 1943. As early as 1927, the building was built as a municipal power station. The crew of the guard with the name Feuerschutzpolizeiwache 4 in Feuerbach was severely decimated during the Second World War. In 1948 the fire engines of the Feuerbach volunteer fire brigade were closed due to a lack of members, the rest were handed over to the professional fire brigade.

As the last of the five fire stations in Stuttgart, the fire police station 5 in Möhringen went into operation in 1944 . The cast of 25 men had to be separated from other guards. They resided in a provisionally furnished farm building. In the 1960s, the local council then determined the urgent need for the new building, which was inaugurated in 1966.

In 1976, fire station 5 became a fire and rescue station (FRW 5). The first ambulance was stationed there. In 1998, rescue at heights was also added to fire station 5.

Ambulance service

The ambulance service in Stuttgart has a long tradition. After the first rescue carriage was procured in 1865, the rescue service had to be handed over to the German Red Cross during the war . Only in 1970, when an emergency doctor vehicle was occupied, was it possible to return to work. Six years later, an ambulance financed by donations was procured for the fire department.

particularities

Control center for security and mobility Stuttgart (SIMOS)

SIMOS, control center for security and mobility Stuttgart

In the Control Center for Security and Mobility Stuttgart, SIMOS for short, four control centers operate without their independence being impaired. The integrated control center of the Stuttgart fire brigade and the rescue service, operated by the German Red Cross, the integrated traffic control center of the Office for Public Order, the Civil Engineering Office, the Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG and the Stuttgart Police Headquarters as well as the management and administrative staff of the state capital for extraordinary events and disasters are housed in the building. 54 employees work in shifts in the control center.

SIMOS was built at the main fire station 3 in Mercedesstrasse within 15 months. The technology replaced the ten-year-old operations control computer in the Cannstatter Wache. The pure construction costs amounted to 4.5 million euros, 10 million euros were invested in technology. The shared use of electricity, air conditioning and ventilation technology can save 1.1 million euros. The city will save almost 2 million euros in rental costs alone over the next few years.

The networking of the facilities has created numerous synergy effects. For example, the traffic can be optimally controlled in the event of an accident or damage, because the traffic control center is informed immediately when the fire brigade is deployed and can react immediately.

During events and disasters is mayor as a political overall responsibility for security cause both use measures and administrative measures, coordinate and take responsibility. The senior management and administrative staff who support him also meet in the building.

Rescue train

The German railway has for accidents in tunnels or bridges a special rescue plan, based on a rescue train developed. Such a rescue train is in Kornwestheim. It consists of two transport trolleys, an equipment trolley, an extinguishing agent trolley and an ambulance vehicle; it is operated by two diesel locomotives of the 714 series . In this way the train can be separated fully automatically in the event of an emergency. This concept makes it possible to get passengers out of the danger area as quickly as possible when the rear part of the train is used, while the other half of the train can remain on site.

During an operation, Rapid Response Groups (SEG) from the Johanniter Accident Aid , fire brigade members and several emergency doctors meet to come to the scene as first aiders by train.

Aftercare for emergency services

The emergency services aftercare only begins after the actual deployment. If an assignment is very stressful for the staff, they can ask their specially trained colleagues for advice. Serious accidents with children, personal acquaintance with the victims, terrible sights of the victims or major incidents are particularly stressful for emergency services. Certain images can be memorized or a feeling of guilt can build up.

"... the operation is not over when the vehicle is in the hall, but when the helper has been taken care of", quote from a fire brigade in Stuttgart

Deployment department

The deployment department plans the deployment of the Stuttgart fire brigade. She is also responsible for all tactical and operational planning, coordinates non-police security and civil protection. The alarm and release order is adapted to new vehicles and a special plan is drawn up for various major events such as the Cannstatter Wasen or the football World Cup in 2006. The deployment department also includes the 24 volunteer fire departments and the three Stuttgart-based fire departments .

Prevention department

Preventive fire and hazard protection is of great importance to the fire department. In this way, the necessary structural and organizational requirements are created under the legal basis. The department is also involved in "fire prevention shows" under the leadership of the building law office. Schools formed a focus in 2001. Safety in tunnels is also part of the range of tasks.

Shelter operations service

The shelter operations service was responsible for the maintenance of protective structures with a civil protection obligation, with the costs being borne by the federal government. Until 1990 he belonged to the Office for Civil Defense. After this was dissolved, the fire department carried out its tasks until the end of 2007. In 2008, all of the property management tasks, including the protective structures, were transferred to the Office for Properties and Housing, and the Shelters Service was subordinated to this office. The shelter operations service was a management unit with around 40 helpers who were responsible for maintenance. These were mainly conscripts released from the military to work in the shelter operations service. Beginning in 2007, the civil protection link was lifted, so the shelters could also be used for other purposes or given up entirely. Federal funding was dropped for approved shelters. Therefore, the shelter operations service was reduced and discontinued with the abolition of compulsory military service. The obligated helpers were released.
