The fire brigade Karlsruhe is the local fire protection authority of the Baden-Württemberg city of Karlsruhe .

history

The voluntary fire brigade in Karlsruhe was founded in 1847 after the fire in the Badisches Staatstheater on February 28th. The first municipal fire engine had been purchased as early as 1722 , but fire fighting was not organized. The volunteer fire brigade initially comprised three companies with a maximum of 120 men each; In 1872 another company was set up for the densely populated, growing southern city. Each company had its own fully equipped watch. In 1876 the volunteer fire brigade already had 363 members.

In 1907, the establishment of a professional fire brigade failed due to resistance from the volunteer fire brigade, but on September 26, 1926 the main fire station in Ritterstrasse, where the professional fire brigade is still located, was inaugurated. It was built by Hermann Billing and is now a listed building. During the Second World War , the fire brigade was converted into the National Socialist fire protection police in 1939 ; this left the city the day before the French invaded and did not return until May 1945.

A radiation protection train was set up in 1962 because of the work at the Karlsruhe nuclear research center. On September 5, 1973, the City Fire Brigade Association was finally founded to coordinate the cooperation between volunteers and the professional fire brigade.
