Vaihingen ([ ˈfaɪ̯ɪŋən ], formerly also Vaihingen auf den Fildern ) is an outer city district of Stuttgart in the high southwest of the state capital. The largest urban district with 21 km² has a large proportion of forest. Between 1970 and 1990, most of the institutes of the University of Stuttgart and other universities were relocated to the campus in the Pfaffenwald .

Vaihingen is located in the southwest of Stuttgart on the Filder plain and borders the districts of Stuttgart-West , Stuttgart-Süd and Möhringen . The highest point in Stuttgart, the Bernhartshöhe , is 548 meters above sea level in the Bernhartswald north of the motorway junction on the edge of the Vaihingen district.

The Nesenbach (formerly in the Honigwiesen ) rises to the west of the A 831 motorway. On its way to the Neckar, it cut into the valley in which the city of Stuttgart developed.

Districts

Vaihingen is the largest urban district in Stuttgart and until June 2007 consisted of the four districts of Büsnau (with the residential areas Lauchhau / Lauchäcker), Dürrlewang , Rohr and Vaihingen (with some other specially designated residential areas, e.g. Dachswald).

With effect from July 1, 2007, the urban structure of the Vaihingen district was changed. For this purpose, the main statute was amended accordingly by resolution of the municipal council on March 22, 2007. Thus there are now twelve districts in the district of Vaihingen by further subdividing the previous district of "Vaihingen": Dachswald, Heerstrasse, Höhenrand, Lauchäcker, Österfeld, Pfaffenwald , Rosental, Vaihingen-Mitte and Wallgraben-West.

history

Vaihingen on the Fildern is mentioned for the first time around 1100, when it was in the possession of the Count of Calw . In 1297 the place came to the hospital in Esslingen am Neckar , whose coat of arms, the Katharinen- Rad, he still bears today. Vaihingen remained with the Free Imperial City of Esslingen until it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Württemberg at the beginning of the 19th century . At that time the place had about 1,300 inhabitants and was assigned to the newly created Oberamt Esslingen , 1807 to the Amtsoberamt Stuttgart and when it was dissolved in 1938 to the district of Böblingen .

For a long time, the center of Vaihingen was characterized by the extensive company premises of the Schwabenbräu brewery and the Vaihinger fruit juices , which only gave way to new developments in the years after 2000.

Two years before the dissolution of the Stuttgart District Office , the independent municipality of Rohr with the remains of the medieval Rohr moated castle was incorporated into Vaihingen on October 1, 1936.

The Rohrer Höhe residential area is part of Rohr and is the highest settlement in Stuttgart.

Büsnau

The Büsnau district was created in the years 1933 to 1939 and 1951 to 1956 on the area of the former state domain of the same name. This area in the forest later came to Vaihingen. To the east, Büsnau borders on the Pfaffenwald (first the forest, behind it the university campus). The area in the northeast is called "shadow". A deep terrain point on Mahdentalstrasse and Magstadter Strasse is referred to as the shadow ground; it is located on the former Solitude race track . Bear Lake and the other park lakes follow immediately afterwards .

Incorporation to Stuttgart

On April 1, 1942, the municipality of Vaihingen was incorporated into Stuttgart together with the places Birkach, Fasanenhof, Möhringen, Plieningen, Solitude and Stammheim . When dividing the city of Stuttgart in municipalities in 1956 the districts were Vaihingen and tube with the district Büsnau the district Vaihingen combined.

Dürrlewang

From 1957, a new district of Dürrlewang was built on the Rohr suburb and partly also on the Möhringen suburb , which was declared the fourth suburb of the Vaihingen district after construction was completed in the mid-1960s.

Monuments

Since 1969, a memorial by the sculptor Hanne Schorp-Pflumm in the Buchrain cemetery at Pascalstrasse 70 has been commemorating the dead in the world wars and the victims of Nazi tyranny.

Vaihingen is located on the junction Stuttgart (formerly junction Vaihingen), the highways A 8 ( Karlsruhe -Stuttgart- Ulm - Munich ) and A 81 ( Wurzburg - Heilbronn -Stuttgart- Singen ) merges and from which the A 831 in the direction Stuttgart -Middle branches.

The city district is located on the Gäubahn . The central transport hub is the Stuttgart-Vaihingen train station . The S-Bahn lines S1 ( Kirchheim (Teck) –Stuttgart– Herrenberg ), S2 ( Schorndorf –Stuttgart– Airport - Filderstadt ) and S3 ( Backnang –Stuttgart – Airport) run via the stops Universität , Österfeld , Vaihingen and Rohr .
Vaihingen station is also the end point of the U1 (from Fellbach ), U3 (from Plieningen ) and U8 (from Ostfildern ) tram lines . Since May 2016, the U12 line coming from Remseck has ended in the Dürrlewang district. Several inner-city bus routes open up the city district. Furthermore, overland bus routes operate u. a. to Sindelfingen and Tübingen .

Parallel to the Nesenbach Viaduct , which leads the rail connection to Stuttgart over the Nesenbachtal , the north-south road runs on a modern road bridge , which has served as a bypass of the city center of Vaihingen since 1999.

In April 2012 Vaihingen was awarded the Fair Trade seal (see Fair Trade City ).

Regional Council Stuttgart

The Stuttgart regional council is based in Vaihingen .

There is a police post of the state police on Robert-Leicht-Strasse. The districts of Vaihingen and Büsnau each have a department of the Stuttgart volunteer fire department. In addition, there is a readiness of the German Red Cross in the city district. With her voluntary work she makes a contribution to civil protection and disaster control , for example by providing one of the two rapid response groups in Stuttgart.

Private schools include the Michael Bauer School (Free Waldorf School and Förderschule), the Free Evangelical School Stuttgart (Christian, general elementary, technical and secondary school and 6-year vocational high school), the element-i school in STEP and the Michael-Bauer-Werkhof vocational school.

Universities and research institutions

In Stuttgart-Vaihingen, in addition to large parts of the University of Stuttgart, there are a number of internationally relevant research institutions, including several Fraunhofer institutes. Around 20,000 students and several thousand academic staff live and work on campus . There are two Max Planck Institutes in the Büsnau district.

The Stuttgart Engineering Park (STEP) is not far from the university campus . The L-Bank has there over an area of about 11 hectares of a technology park developed and established a subsidiary in order to plan the individual projects to build and operate. Since 2000, seven properties with a total of 90,000 square meters of office space and corresponding parking facilities have been built and rented there. Another 60,000 square meters of office space is still possible. An infrastructure building on Gropiusplatz with service providers, shopping facilities, a restaurant, fitness center and conference rooms forms the center of the park. There is a direct S-Bahn connection ( Österfeld ).

With Lenovo one of the largest telecommunications and IT company is located in the district Vaihingen. The headquarters of the construction and real estate consultant Drees & Sommer is located in a complex comprising several office buildings near the Stuttgart-Vaihingen junction .

The SchwabenGalerie shopping center with 47,000 square meters of floor space in the center of the town by the town hall is economically important for the city district . It was opened in 2004 after two years of construction and is located on the former Schwabenbräu brewery area.

Together with Möhringen, Vaihingen maintains the industrial area / business park "Am Wallgraben" directly at the S-Bahn station.

The United States European Command (EUCOM) is the headquarters of the US armed forces in Europe in the Patch Barracks on the western outskirts . In 1936/38 it was built as a Kurmärker barracks for the 7th Panzer Regiment of the Wehrmacht .
