Pope visits to Austria
There have been only five papal visits to Austria in the two thousand year history of the papacy ; four of them date from 1983. The first papal visit came in 1782, when Pius VI. in the course of the disputes over the reform policy of Emperor Joseph II traveled to Austria for negotiations. Most of the visits to Austria were made by Pope John Paul II , who came to Austria in 1983, 1988 and 1998. All three visits had the character of a pastoral trip . The last Pope's visit to date was in September 2007, when Benedict XVI. the Heiligenkreuz Abbey , the Papal Philosophical-Theological College Benedict XVI there. , Mariazell and Vienna visited.
