The Südkabel GmbH based in Mannheim specializes in the manufacture of power cables and cable accessories and their installation and assembly. Planning and construction of high-voltage cable systems up to the highest voltage level are also part of the range of services offered by the Mannheim company.

Company history

The company was founded in Mannheim in 1898 under the name Süddeutsche Kabelwerke (Südkabel). Through the merger of several companies, Kabel- und Lackdrahtfabriken GmbH (Kabel + Draht) was created in 1970. Kabel + Draht was owned by Brown, Boveri & Cie. For 18 years . (BBC). After the formation of the ABB Group through the merger of ASEA and BBC, the name of the company was changed to ABB Kabel und Draht GmbH in 1988. Since 1997 the heavy current activities have been continued under the company name (company) ABB Energiekabel GmbH. On January 1, 2004, the Wilms Group acquired the cable and accessories plant with all its activities in Mannheim from ABB. Since then, the company has again carried the traditional name Südkabel GmbH.

technology

By introducing the insulating material cross- linked polyethylene (VPE), Südkabel changed the world of cables, first in the medium voltage range and later in the high voltage range. In today's generation of cables, VPE is clearly superior to thermoplastic PE with its dimensional stability, even at high short-circuit temperatures. With regard to thermal aging, too, VPE has established itself as the first choice of insulation.
