Christian Brünings , in the Dutch area Christiaan Brunings , (born November 8, 1736 in Neckarau , † May 16, 1805 in The Hague ) was a German-Dutch hydraulic engineer .

Life

After attending grammar school, Brünings first tried to study at Heidelberg University . However, this failed due to the financial resources. Nevertheless, he was able to acquire extensive knowledge of hydraulic engineering.

In 1769, Brünings was appointed inspector general in dykes in the Netherlands. Between 1789 and 1798 he took part in various commissions on drainage, dyke construction and other related topics in hydraulic engineering. He was involved in the diversion of the Maas as well as in the redesign of the Pannerdens Canal and water diversion measures during floods. Brünings also introduced a machine with which rivers could be measured. He increasingly convinced the government through his work and finally became director general of all river and sea dikes of the Batavian Republic on July 30, 1800 . In this office he died.

Brünings was buried in the St. Bavo Church in Haarlem. The ship Christiaan Brunings , which was built in 1900 and is now in the Het Scheepvaartmuseum , was named after him .
