The Great or St. Bavo Church ( Dutch Grote of Sint-Bavokerk ) is a three-aisled cruciform church, built between 1370 and 1520. It is the largest church in the Dutch city ​​of Haarlem . It was originally built in the 15th century as a Catholic cathedral in the Gothic style. The name of the church is Saint Bavo . The Reformation was introduced at the church in 1578 ; today it is an Evangelical Uniate parish church. The building was declared a Rijksmonument .

For structural reasons, the central tower is a wooden tower covered with lead shingles. The stone tower, which was demolished between 1514 and 1517 due to overloading of the columns, now adorns the Bakenesserkirche.

In 1635, Pieter Jansz created. Saenredam the painting View into the ambulatory of St. Bavo in Haarlem and 1636 interior of the St. Bavo church in Haarlem .

Funerals were held in the church until 1831. Among other things, the important Dutch painter Frans Hals is buried here.

Dimensions

The cathedral has a length of 108 and a roof height of 10 meters. The ship is 31 meters wide including the aisles; the greatest width is 47 meters. The tower has a weight of 250 tons and reaches a height of 76 meters.

The organ of Christian Müller was completed in 1738; In 1740 Georg Friedrich Handel is said to have played on it. The ten-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart played it in 1766 .
