Bavo
Bavo († around 655 ) ( Dutch : Sint Bavo , sometimes also: Sint Baaf ) was a 7th century saint who is venerated in parts of the Netherlands and Flanders , especially Ghent .
Life
Bavo was born in what is now Belgium at the end of the 6th or beginning of the 7th century . He came from a noble family and was originally called Allowin. According to legend, he was the son of Pippin the Elder . After the death of his wife, daughter of a count Adilio and mother of Adeltraut (Adeltrudis), who later became abbess in the Malbodium monastery (today: Maubeuge ), Bavo gave all his belongings to the poor and entered a Ghent monastery, where he lived around 655 died.
Patronage
St. Bavo or St. Baaf is the patron saint of the St. Bavo Cathedral in Ghent and the St. Bavo Church and Cathedral in Haarlem . The closed Saint Bavo Abbey in Ghent was also dedicated to him. His public holidays in Ghent are August 1st and October 1st; but in Haarlem on May 10th and August 9th. Bavo is the patron saint of the dioceses of Ghent and Haarlem-Amsterdam .
He is also considered the patron saint of falconers .
iconography
Because of his aristocratic origins, Bavo is often portrayed as an elegantly dressed nobleman, armed and spurred, with a hawk on his fist or giving gifts to the poor.
