The Diffené Bridge is a bascule bridge at the northern ship entrance from the Old Rhine to the Mannheim industrial port . It leads from the Luzenberg district to the Friesenheimer Insel . It was named after Philipp Diffené , president of the Mannheim Chamber of Commerce from 1880 to 1903.

history

The first bridge at this point was built in 1901/02. In order to allow shipping to continue to enter the port , the bridge could be rotated by a mechanical device in order to open a passage. The low load-bearing capacity of 12 tons and the space for the passage, which is limited by the dimensions of the bridge, led to new building plans as early as the 1960s. Ultimately, it was decided to build two bascule bridges next to each other , one each for road and rail traffic. The new Diffené bridge was inaugurated in 1988 and opened to traffic. The design of the new building has meanwhile become a trademark of the industrial port and was awarded a BSVI ( Federal Association of Road Construction and Transport Engineers) award in 1990 , as evidenced by a medal attached to the building.
