The Augsburg-West junction is a junction of the federal autobahn 8 with the autobahn-like federal highways B 2 and B 17. At the beginning of the 1990s, it replaced a simple junction of the same name in the Gersthofen urban area .
The cross is designed in the shape of a clover , but not exactly symmetrical due to the adaptation to different heights. To the north, the B 2 ( Augsburg - Donauwörth ), which is developed like a motorway and continues south of the junction as the B 17, is also similar to a motorway, in an east-west direction the A 8 ( Munich - Augsburg - Stuttgart ).
Initially, the A 8 from Augsburg to Munich was expanded to 6 lanes, and in the following years the line to Ulm as well . In contrast to the Augsburg-Ost junction, the carriageways and the dimensions of the overpasses were prepared for the 6-lane expansion right from the start, so that major renovations were not required. This was successfully completed in November 2015.
Some time ago the B 2 was upgraded either to an extension of the A 77 ( Nuremberg –Donauwörth – Augsburg) or to the A 91 ( Feuchtwangen –Donauwörth – Augsburg), so that Augsburg-West would have become a motorway junction. However, these plans have been discontinued.
