The oil mill , also popularly known as the rapeseed mill or Winkelhauser mill , was a water mill of medieval origin in the Angermund district of Düsseldorf . The above-ground part was demolished in May 2014 for an extension of the federal highway 288 . The cellars and foundations are protected as a ground monument and still exist.

location

The mill was located in the northernmost tip of the area of the city of Düsseldorf on the border with the Duisburg district of Huckingen . Only a few meters further east runs the Angerbach , directly north of the former oil mill, the federal highway 288 .

history

The last building, demolished in May 2014, was from the second half of the 18th century. A former mill building that has been in operation since at least the 12th / 13th centuries. Century existed, was a little closer to the knight seat Groß-Winkelhausen . Like the sand mill, the oil mill was owned by the von Winkelhausen family . Together with Gut Winkelhausen, the oil mill was inherited by the von Hatzfeld family . When the authorities asked them about a concession to operate the oil mill in 1817, Countess Hatzfeld replied: "... as it is announced that the manors were already enjoying their freedom in 1450, so I believe that there was never a concession certificate, including me do not have any, has been granted. ” The house, which was later transformed into a grain mill, was no longer in operation at this point.

In the 19th century there were long Swiss , i. H. Melker, of the Groß-Winkelhausen estate. In 1830 there were still 10 people living in the Winkelhausmühle . The Schweizerhaus was later rented out as a residential building. The water wheel was removed before 1933. Until the demolition, one could still see the round recess for the axis of the mill wheel in the masonry of the eastern gable. The medieval cellar, in which a large part of the mill must have been, was filled in in the past.

Current condition

Since the federal highway 288 is to be expanded to the federal highway 524 , the above-ground parts of the building were demolished in May 2014. The foundations and cellars, which have been protected as a ground monument since April 7, 2010, are to be buried under the side embankment of the expanded B288.
