An incision , also known as a trough , describes a linear earthwork structure in the form of a trench- like depression in the terrain surface that is open at the top to accommodate a traffic route that is created by excavation (removal of soil material ).

It is used to level lively topography and to soften slopes. It is bounded laterally by embankments and downward by the bottom of the cut . The embankments can be inclined differently or stepped depending on the stability of the ground.

The cut is used for roads , railways , canals and levadas . Cuts were also made in ravines , but there due to permanent use and rainwater. An incision is also used in the open construction method for tunnels .

A path running through a longer incision is referred to as an incision path and a station located therein is also referred to as an incision station.

Natural incisions in the terrain are mostly created by furrows in the water.
