De Groote Peel is between Eindhoven and Venlo lying bog . It is part of an originally 30,000 hectare raised bog, of which only two remains of raised bogs have survived due to extensive amelioration . De Groote Peel is the southern, remaining remnant of this raised bog. In the north is De Verheven Peel . De Groote Peel is managed as a national park in the Netherlands with an area of more than 1400 hectares , but the Dutch understanding of a national park does not always correspond to the international criteria in every respect. De Groote Peel has been designated a nature reserve since 1951 and was declared one of today's (2014) 20 Dutch national parks in 1993. The park is visited by around 100,000 visitors annually.

features

De Groote Peel has extensive bodies of water that were created by previous potting. In addition, there are not peat bog areas that are mostly overgrown with pipe grass. Typical raised bog habitats are only present in fragments. There are still large wetlands present, the relatively undisturbed and as a resting place among other crane , bean goose and curlew and redshank are significant. The paths leading into the moor are therefore closed both during the bird breeding season and during migration . On the southern edge of the area, near the village of Ospel, there is an information center, from which some stick dams lead along the edge of the moor. The actual moor center is only accessible to visitors via a few paths and outside of the bird breeding and migration times.
