The National Park Duinen van Texel is one of currently 20 Dutch national parks . It is located in the province of North Holland on the island of Texel . It was founded on May 1, 2002 and covers an area of ​​approximately 4,300 hectares. The national park extends over the entire west coast of Texel and has a length of about 22 kilometers with a maximum width of four kilometers in the south and north. At the narrowest point near De Koog , however, it is only a few hundred meters wide. The highest dunes reach a height of almost 25 meters.

The landscape consists mainly of the island's dune belt, but there are also forests, beaches , heather and water areas as well as creeks (De Slufter) . The marine fauna and flora of the national park are correspondingly diverse.

Around 80 different bird species breed in the area of ​​the national park, including rare species such as the spoonbill , little tern and short-eared owl . The most numerous breeding birds are the lesser black-backed gull . The land-living mammals are only represented on the island by ermines , hares , rabbits , hedgehogs and five types of mice . There is also a population of broad-winged bats . Representatives of the amphibians in the area include grass and moor frogs , natterjack toads and the pond newt .

The national park offers various hiking trails and routes for cycling. In addition, various guided tours are offered on which the nature of the national park and especially the bird life can be observed. In addition, near the village of De Koog on the edge of the park, the Ecomare natural history museum and aquarium is located , where the flora and fauna of the island as well as the Wadden Sea and the ecology of the North Sea are presented. With around five million visitors a year, the Duinen van Texel is the most visited of the 20 national parks in the European Netherlands.
