The Sint Eustatius National Marine Park is a marine reserve around the island of St. Eustatius , one of the Netherlands belonging to particular communities in the Caribbean .

There are two specially protected marine reserves within the national park .

administration

The island government has entrusted the management to the NGO St Eustatius National Parks Foundation (STENAPA) . This also manages the Quill / Boven National Park and the Miriam C. Schmidt Botanical Garden .

The park has an area of ​​27.5 km² and extends from the high water mark to 30 m water depth , up to 3 km off the coast. The two reserve zones have a total area of ​​4.9 km². Fishing and anchoring are prohibited in these zones . Numerous diving spots are marked with buoys to which boats can be moored.

Coral reefs

The coral reefs in the park developed on the remains of the volcanoes in the north and south of the island and on shipwrecks . In the environment of the reefs, among others live angelfish , butterfly fish , flying gurnard , eels , pits Knight fish , frog fish , sea horses , octopus , lobsters , stingrays , sharks and sea turtles .

Dolphins and humpback whales roam the park from January to April .

Sea Turtle Conservation Program

Leatherback turtles , green sea turtles ( green turtles ) and hawksbill turtles nest on five beaches on Sint Eustatius . The latter are threatened with extinction. In 2001, STENAPA started a monitoring program for the turtle nests, which has been expanded over time. The program is part of the Wider Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation Network (WIDECAST) and aims to protect nests from human disturbance and destruction from sand mining, pollution and the like. protect. For this purpose, the habitats are protected by technical facilities and regular surveys are carried out, which contribute to political decision-making with current data. Other activities within the framework of the program include actions to clean up the beaches, campaigns against plastic waste , educate the population and hatch eggs in special incubators .
