The Siemens Desiro Classic is a local transport multiple unit from the Siemens Desiro family manufactured by Siemens Mobility (formerly Siemens Transportation Systems) .
Diesel multiple unit
Most of the Desiro Classic are designed as two-part combustion railcars with diesel-hydraulic drive .
In Germany, the vehicles are mainly used in local transport in the federal states of Bavaria , Brandenburg , Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , Thuringia , Rhineland-Palatinate , Hesse and Saarland . At Deutsche Bahn AG , the multiple unit is run as the 642 series .
commitment
Germany
Since their delivery in 2000, the class 642 combustion railcars have been used in the greater Nuremberg , Augsburg and Kempten areas , as well as around Dresden , Zwickau , Erfurt , Kaiserslautern , Leipzig , Chemnitz and Rostock . On some branch lines in Bavaria and Saxony only the new railcars are used in order to take advantage of the advantages of modern vehicles - such as the high acceleration and the possibility of creating demand stops . One such route is the Nuremberg Northeast – Graefenberg railway line . On the topographically difficult Müglitztalbahn Heidenau - Altenberg , the new vehicles enabled a significant reduction in travel times and a multiplication of the number of passengers.
The 642 series is sometimes used in multiple units on regional rail and regional express routes. These are for example

Between Dresden Hauptbahnhof and Wrocław Główny ( Breslau Hauptbahnhof ), the Desiro Classic from March 2009 to December 2019 reversed three pairs of trains daily between Görlitz and Wrocław often in double traction. The multiple units operating on this line have been upgraded for operation in the Polish network.
Since December 2008, the vehicles have also been used in the West Palatinate network of DB Regio Südwest. Due to the increased station density and the tight timetable, the vehicles were equipped with more powerful engines and steps on the doors. In addition, the railcars received a new interior. Some also got a “train baptism”, in which the vehicles were given city and place names with coats of arms from the diesel network. (Example: 642 107 - Zweibrücken).
These vehicles and the Bombardier Talent trains have been in use in the southern Palatinate network since December 2010 . Some railcars are currently parked due to a lack of demand due to line closures and reassignments.

Other countries
Outside Germany, there are various variants of the Desiro Classic with different equipment features:
country | designation | number |
---|---|---|
Bulgaria | BDŽ series 10 | 25th |
Denmark | DSB MQ | 28 |
Austria | ÖBB 5022 | 60 |
Romania | CFR series 96 | 120 |
Hungary | MÁV series 6342 | 31 |
United States | NCTD Sprinter | 12 |
From 2003 to 2005, the OSE also used eight two-part diesel multiple units as class 660 , which were then handed over to MÁV.
Passenger compartment
The passenger compartment is divided into the low-floor area (from the entrance to the seating area above the Jakobs bogie ) and the higher areas at each end of the car. Due to the comparatively large engine compartment, the 642 series, however, has a lower proportion of low-floor units than comparable trains such as Bombardier Talent or Alstom Lint . Glass walls and doors separate entry areas and transition areas. The walls are made of plastic , some of which are made of wood .
The trains of the 642 series are available with different seating arrangements. The original variant has 98 second-class seats and 12 first-class seats. In the low-floor entry area, folding seats on the wall create space for bicycles , wheelchairs or prams . In the version, which can be found in some parts of Bavaria, for example on the Kahlgrundbahn , the first class is omitted.
Above the seats there is a continuous glass luggage rack with a luminous band, each seating area has a stop button. The stops are announced computer-controlled via GPS and displayed in the interior. The destination (and, depending on the display generation, also the intermediate stops) for those waiting on the platform is displayed on display boards on the front sides (the train head ) and on the sides . The toilet is accessible to the disabled in the low-floor area through a wide sliding door and is designed as a closed system. There is a passenger intercom to the driver in the entry areas .
The passenger compartment is heated by a hot water circulating air heater , in extreme cold by oil firing. In summer, the air conditioning should ensure comfortable temperatures , but the systems are still prone to failure. Six windows per car can be tilted, but in almost all trains they remain closed due to the air conditioning.
The wide entrances are steplessly designed as automatic pivoting sliding doors. At the transition to the normal high passenger compartment, recycling bins are installed next to the stairs, under each seat (except for the folding seats) there is a pull-out bin / ashtray, although some of these have been removed in the vehicles of DB Regio AG.
Due to various redesign variants, there are now a wide variety of equipment variants. In the meantime, ticket machines, camera surveillance systems, coffee kitchens and additional information monitors, among other things, have been retrofitted in different regions.
technology
Car body
The car body is designed as a self-supporting aluminum tube in integral construction. The head sections with the driver's cabs are designed as prefabricated GRP modules that are glued to the extended underframe of the aluminum car body.
drive
The 642 series is powered by two diesel engines made by MTU or MAN (each 275 kW / 374 PS or 315 kW / 428 PS or 335 kW / 455 PS or 360 kW / 490 PS). These are located under the high-floor area between the powered bogie and the low-floor area. Their torque is transmitted to the outer bogie via a hydromechanical five-speed automatic transmission with a starting converter and integrated retarder .
Brakes
The railcars are equipped with a direct electropneumatic brake (ep brake) and an indirect multi-release compressed air brake as a fall-back level. In addition, the motor bogies were equipped with magnetic rail brakes. The retarder also brakes hydrodynamically when the ep brake is used . Spring-loaded brakes are available as parking brakes . The magnetic rail brake is used for forced and rapid braking, but remains ineffective during emergency braking. It can also be switched on by the driver using a toggle switch.
coupling
Scharfenberg couplings with contact attachments are available as pulling and pushing devices . These were originally intended to enable multiple traction with the series 640 , 641 , 643 , 644 , 646 and 648 , but this turned out to be impossible due to the lack of compatible vehicle software . It is only possible to tow other series. However, this coupling enables the automatic coupling and uncoupling of a second railcar of the same series. This makes the so-called winging , the combined management of two trains with different routes on a section, operationally much easier.
Other technical equipment
A matrix train destination display is installed under the large windows at the front . There is a ticket machine in the multi-purpose compartment of some vehicles. In addition, some trains have sliding steps to bridge gaps and video surveillance.
Hybrid multiple unit
In 2011/12, the train set 642 129 of the Westfrankenbahn was equipped with a hybrid drive as a prototype . The originally installed 275 kW / 374 hp diesel engines were replaced by two so-called PowerPacks designed as parallel hybrids from MTU Friedrichshafen , and lithium iron phosphate batteries were installed on the roof of the vehicle to store the braking current (see also: Regenerative braking ).
The Powerpacks consist of a 315 kW / 428 PS diesel engine and an electric machine that can work as a generator as well as a motor and has a continuous output of 200 kW / 272 PS (peak output 400 kW / 544 PS for 60 seconds). The accumulators have a capacity of 4.7 kilowatt hours. Overall, the use of the hybrid drive should enable energy savings of up to 25 percent. In addition, the vehicles can also drive purely electrically over certain distances and are therefore significantly quieter than diesel.
In addition, the previously mechanically driven air conditioning system has been replaced by a newly developed CO 2 air conditioning system with an electric drive, which is intended to improve the vehicle's economy by a further 10 percent.
The fully converted vehicle was officially presented at InnoTrans 2012. It was to be used in passenger service on the non-electrified Aschaffenburg – Miltenberg railway in Bavaria from the end of 2012 , but this never happened. Building on the knowledge gained there, another vehicle was converted for the Erzgebirge Railway as part of the “EcoTrain” project .
Subsequently, a modified and modular hybrid power pack that can be used in multiple series is to be developed ready for use. When approval has been granted, a small series is to be tested in passenger operations at the Erzgebirgsbahn. Provided that approval has been granted by 2017 [out of date] as hoped , the Erzgebirgsbahn could convert another 12 trains.
The Federal Ministry of Transport supported the project with 1.9 million euros. The Hybrid VT 642 has not been used regularly to this day.
Conversions
A total of 35 railcars have been modernized for the Westfrankenbahn since 2017. By Chip tuning the performance of 275 kW will be increased to 315 kW, sliding steps are built and the trains continue with Wi-Fi and passenger information systems.
Electric multiple unit
Part of the Desiro Classic was designed as a two- to five-part electric multiple unit and delivered to Bulgaria, Greece and Slovenia.
