Korbach Hauptbahnhof (until 1 February 1935 "Corbach"; since the end of 2018. Main Station ) is a Opened on 15 August 1893 former crossing station and current separation station in the town of Korbach in northern Hesse Waldeck-Frankenberg near railroad tracks Wabern-Brilon Forest and Warburg –Sarnau .
Transport-related importance
Korbach was once a railway junction where two routes crossed:
- Sarnau – Warburg , from Marburg (Lahn) via Frankenberg to Volkmarsen and until 1967 on to Warburg and
- Wabern – Brilon , from Wabern via Bad Wildungen , Waldeck and Willingen to Brilon Wald .
All four were temporarily without traffic; Today three directions are in operation: to Kassel , Marburg and Brilon. Trains run every hour during the day between Korbach and Kassel (from Volkmarsen via Wolfhagen ) and every two hours on the section between Marburg and Brilon Wald / Brilon Stadt .
history
With the opening of the Korbach train station on August 15, 1893 and the rail connection via Volkmarsen to Warburg and Kassel, a modest economic boom began for the city. The further expansion of the rail network prompted the entrepreneur Louis Peter to found the "Mitteldeutsche Gummiwarenfabrik Louis Peter AG", which was taken over by Continental AG in 1929 . The plant had its own siding . A large freight station was built north of the passenger station , the area of which is now mainly used by a logistics company for Continental.
The Waldeck –Korbach section ("Ederseebahn") on the line from Wabern to Brilon-Wald was opened on June 1, 1912. About five years later, on April 2, 1917, this route was continuously passable as far as Brilon-Wald.
During the Second World War, the Wabern – Korbach line was used as an alternative route - mainly for the connection from Kassel to the Ruhr area - for freight and passenger traffic. In a bombing raid on the Selbach Viaduct on March 18, 1945 , this section was interrupted and the Deutsche Reichsbahn switched to the Kassel – Volkmarsen – Korbach line.
As part of the expansion into a railway junction , the old station building from 1893, which was two hundred meters northwest of the current location, was replaced by a representative new building based on plans by Alois Holtmeyer at the current location in 1912 . The reception building has an L-shaped floor plan with a natural stone base and a tower-like raised east wing. While the track system was largely spared from destruction in the Second World War, the station building was completely rebuilt in the style of the 1950s as a result of war damage.
The station has officially been the main train station since 2018. In December 2018, the Kurhessenbahn's new workshop for the railcars of the Northwest Hesse network went into operation.
Closures and reactivations since 1987
Until the mid-1970s, long- distance trains ran continuously , including to Amsterdam Centraal and the Heckeneilzug between Hamburg-Altona and Frankfurt am Main Hbf . The latter connection disappeared from the course books in 1979, while the D-Zug pair Bad Wildungen -Amsterdam ran until 1991.
The dismantling of the route network had already begun, with significant effects on Korbach station as well. Passenger traffic on the Korbach – Volkmarsen section was discontinued on May 30, 1987, but freight traffic continued. After the number of votes for reactivation increased in the 1990s, passenger traffic from Kassel via Volkmarsen to Korbach was resumed on October 4, 1998. Today it is operated by the DB subsidiary Kurhessenbahn . There is also little freight traffic here.
Passenger traffic on the Lower Edertal Railway from Korbach Süd to Frankenberg , which opened on May 1, 1900, ceased on May 30, 1987. The Hessian state parliament decided on September 25, 2008 to reactivate the line and to get it ready for regular rail traffic. A performance audit was completed with a value greater than 1. In September 2012, the NVV and the district committee of the Waldeck-Frankenberg district also advocated this. The reactivation took place on September 11, 2015. The short section from Korbach to Korbach Süd had already been reopened on September 29, 1999.
The Ederseebahn , d. H. the middle section of the Wabern – Brilon Wald section was closed in the Bad Wildungen – Korbach section since May 27, 1995 due to viaducts in need of rehabilitation and was shut down a year later. Later the former railway line was paved and converted into a cycle path ; this now runs from Korbach to Edertal-Buhlen.
Railway systems
The single-track routes of the Ederseebahn and the Untere Edertalbahn met in the south of the city on the Südring, about 350 m before the Korbach-Süd stop , and then ran parallel to each other to the entrance to the Korbach train station. This had two platforms and five tracks in the area of the passenger station . Switch connections existed (and still exist today) in the goods station immediately to the north . After that, the two routes split on the north ring immediately after passing through the freight station and crossed 150 meters further north, after crossing under the B 252.
After the line closures in the 1980s, the passenger station was also partially dismantled. Track 1, which previously served the Untere Edertalbahn in the direction of Frankenberg, was now only a siding ; meanwhile the RB42 stops here in the direction of Willingen. The RB42 trains to Marburg stop on platform 2, the "opposite lane" on the Untere Edertalbahn. Once you drove from track 3 on the Ederseebahn to Bad Wildungen; today the trains stop there and to Kassel. Track 4 used to be the start of the Uplandbahn to Brilon-Wald, but was shortened to a stump track when the bus station was expanded . Since 2003, trains have been running from there on the Uplandbahn to Brilon Wald , and since December 11th 2011 they have continued to Brilon Stadt.
Remodeling
For the Hessentag 2018, the main station and the ZOB were heavily rebuilt. To this end, rail traffic was temporarily suspended in summer 2017 and the trains were replaced by buses.
Signal box
Since November 2009, the station has been equipped with an electronic interlocking and Ks signals . The old electromechanical signal box has been empty since then.

Korbach train station is still the central public transport hub in Waldecker Land , despite the suspension of passenger traffic in the direction of Wabern . The two routes to Kassel and Brilon-Wald are operated by the Kurhessenbahn every hour, the one to Frankenberg and on to Marburg every two hours. Attached is a bus station , which offers further connection options.
Freight transport
The freight has been set since the 1970s gradually. Today only four companies, including Continental AG , are regularly served by freight trains.
