The Selbacher Viaduct (also called Reiherbachbrücke ) is a seven-arched, 193 m long and 28 m high railway bridge of the disused Ederseebahn and today's Ederseebahn cycle path in the Waldeck district of Selbach in the north Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg ( Germany ).

Geographical location

The Selbach Viaduct bridges the valley of the Reiherbach , the longest tributary of the Werbe , about 650 m (as the crow flies ) southeast or below Selbach , the smallest district of Waldeck.

The bridge is located at kilometer 21.0 of the Ederseebahn, in the middle section of the Wabern – Brilon-Wald railway line . The namesake of this railway line , the Edersee , is located around 5 km (as the crow flies ) south of the bridge. The federal road 485 runs about 125 m south of the viaduct , from which a cul-de-sac in the Reiherbachtal leads to Selbach.

Bridge data

The viaduct is 193 m long and 28 m high. The arch bridge made of natural stone has seven arches with a span of 25 m each , resulting in six bridge piers and two abutments .

history

Ederseebahn

The Selbach Viaduct was built from 1910 to 1913 as part of the Wabern – Brilon-Wald railway line, which was only completed in 1917, in the KorbachBad Wildungen section ( called Ederseebahn ) for the transport of goods and passengers. It was created as part of the construction of the nearby barrier wall (1908–1914) of the Edersee .

During the Second World War , several bombing raids were carried out on the bridge in February and March 1945, because the railway line at that time served as an alternative route for trains running between Kassel and the Ruhr area . During the third attack on March 18, 1945, the viaduct was so badly damaged that train traffic had to be stopped and goods and passengers had to be brought to the stops of the two Waldecker villages of Netze in the southeast and Sachsenhausen in the west by horse-drawn vehicles and automobiles . In July 1945, the roughly one-year repair phase began, until trains were able to cross the bridge again from July 22, 1946.

In the post-war period, trains ran over the viaduct until 1995. The suspension of rail traffic was justified mainly due to the dilapidation of the Buhlen Viaduct to the south-east at route kilometers 10.7 and the necessary renovation of the viaduct. Refurbishment attempts failed due to lack of money.

Ederseebahn cycle path

The Korbach - Buhlen section of the Ederseebahn was converted into the Ederseebahn cycle path between 2008 and 2012 . The Selbach Viaduct was restored from 2009 to 2010 and provided with an asphalt roadway for the cycle path.
